Gemini in Chrome

This article is intended for administrators who want to learn about availability and how to configure this feature in Chrome. For more information on what data is collected and how it’s used, see the Generative AI in Google Workspace Privacy Hub.

Use of this service is governed by the Google Workspace Terms and the Workspace Service Specific Terms.

Gemini in Chrome is designed to help your users get more done while browsing. This goes beyond having easy access to the existing Gemini experience. Gemini in Chrome also can use the context of the currently viewed webpage (with user permission) to provide relevant responses.

Configure policy

Gemini in Chrome is configured via the Gemini app setting and Chrome’s GeminiSettings policy. Access to this feature requires both to be enabled.

Configure Gemini in Chrome settings in the Admin console

To configure settings for a specific group of user accounts or enrolled Chrome browsers, put the users or browsers in an organizational unit or group.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account to the Google Admin console.

If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.

  2. Go to  Menu and then Devices > Chrome > Settings. The User & browser settings page opens by default.

Requires having the Mobile Device Management administrator privilege.

If you signed up for Chrome Enterprise Core, go to Menu and then Chrome browser > Settings.

  3. (Optional) To apply the setting only to some users and enrolled browsers, at the side, select an organizational unit (often used for departments) or configuration group (advanced). Show me how

Group settings override organizational units. Learn more

  4. Scroll to Generative AI.
  5. Select Gemini integrations.
  6. Click the desired policy value.
  7. Click Save. Or, you might click Override for an organizational unit.

To later restore the inherited value, click Inherit (or Unset for a group).

Settings typically take effect in minutes, but can take up to 24 hours to apply for everyone.

(Optional) Enable Gemini for all users regardless of their Google Workspace license

To allow Gemini in Chrome for users without a qualifying Google Workspace edition, you must grant them access to Gemini under consumer terms.

The GenAiDefaultSettings policy can only be set in the Admin console. This setting doesn't impact model training, as that is defined in your Workspace agreements. Learn more at the Generative AI in Google Workspace Privacy Hub.

Data usage

We want to be completely clear that generative AI does not change the foundational privacy protections that give you choice and control over your data:

  • Your interactions with Gemini stay within your organization. Gemini does not share your content outside your organization without your permission.
  • Your existing Google Workspace protections are automatically applied. Gemini brings the same enterprise-grade security as the rest of Google Workspace.
  • Your content is not used for any other customers. Your content is not human reviewed or used for Generative AI model training outside your domain without permission.

Chrome auto browse

With auto browse, Gemini works in Chrome browser tabs to complete multi-step tasks that you assign it. With the user's permission, Gemini in Chrome can also use Google Password Manager to sign in to sites. You can use the GeminiActOnWebSettings, GeminiActOnWebAllowedForURLs, and GeminiActOnWebBlockedForURLs policies to control auto browse.

Auto browse is currently off by default for managed users and can be enabled using the GeminiActOnWebSettings policy for users with the following Google Workspace editions: Google AI Pro for Education, Gemini Education Premium, Business Plus, Business Standard, Enterprise Plus, Enterprise Standard, AI Ultra Access, and AI Expanded Access.

Users will also be able to connect Chrome to Gemini Spark. This permits the Gemini Spark agent to invoke auto browse, to perform autonomous, multi-step actions on Chrome clients using the active browser session. For managed users, this can be enabled with the GeminiSparkSettings policy.

For eligibility criteria, go to Ask Gemini in Chrome to complete tasks for you with auto browse. For detailed roll-out information, check the Chrome Enterprise and Education release notes.
