Create and use notebooks in Gemini Apps

Notebooks are a way to organize your projects in Gemini Apps in a dedicated, focused space. Notebooks provide a continuous chat experience that remembers your sources, instructions, and ongoing discussions. Notebooks use both Gemini Apps and NotebookLM and share & sync info between both products.

Notebooks can be used when you want to do things like:

  • Plan a trip or vacation
  • Apply to college
  • Learn a new hobby or skill
  • Create a business plan
  • Prepare for an exam

What you need

  • To use this feature, you must be signed in to Gemini Apps with a personal Google Account. Learn how to sign in to Gemini Apps
    • Work and school accounts are currently not supported.

Create a notebook

To create a new notebook in Gemini Apps:
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app  .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Under Notebooks, tap New notebook.
  4. Give your new notebook a name. This name helps you organize your notebooks and also helps you find the notebook in NotebookLM.
  5. Enter a prompt to start your notebook.
  6. (optional) Tap sources to add files for Gemini to reference for your project.
Tips:
  • Based on your Google AI Plan, you can add up to 600 sources. Learn about NotebookLM limits.
  • Notebooks created in Gemini can't use an existing notebook as a source.

Chat with your notebook

You can chat continuously with your notebook. Gemini remembers the context of your sources and instructions during this chat experience. Your chats in Gemini apps notebooks can include web searches and use of any Gemini tools.   

Study notebooks

Study notebooks let you upload notes or study materials to create personalized, interactive lessons. Features include:
  • Diagnostic Quizzes: Take quizzes to identify knowledge gaps and strengths.
  • Personalized Lessons: Gemini builds bite-sized, interactive lessons based on quiz results and learning goals.
  • Progress Tracking: Lessons and recommendations automatically update as you complete activities and track your proficiency.

Tip: Study notebooks sync with NotebookLM, allowing you to create flashcards and infographics from your course materials.

Create a study notebook

Important: Study notebooks are currently available at gemini.google.com but not with the Gemini mobile app.

  
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, go to gemini.google.com
  2. On the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Tap New notebook > Study
  4. In the conversation to set up your study notebook, tell Gemini what your learning goal is.  You can say things like:
    • Help me prep for the ACT (JEE etc)
    • Help me study for my Calculus midterm
  5. Add additional details to customize your notebook.
    • (optional) Click Add files [icon] to add study materials such as notes. You can upload files from your device or add from Google Drive.
Tips:  
  • Your lessons, conversations, quizzes & tests, and uploaded sources can all be found in your study notebook. Learn how to find and manage your notebooks in Gemini Apps.
  • You can’t edit the goal of a study notebook. If you want to focus on a new goal, create a new notebook

Add an existing chat to a notebook

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app  .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Search chats .
  3. Find the chat that you want to add to a notebook.
  4. Next to the chat, tap More and then Add to notebook Notebook.
  5. Select the notebook you want to add the chat to.

Tip: Chats added to a notebook in Gemini Apps will automatically sync in Notebook LM.

Manage & customize notebooks

You can customize, organize, and adjust settings for your notebooks.

Find your notebooks
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app  .
  2. On the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Under "All Notebooks," is a list of any notebooks you’ve created.
Tip: Any NotebookLM notebooks that you’ve shared with someone else or have been shared with you will not appear in Gemini App.
Rename a notebook
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app  .
  2. On the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Under "All Notebooks," find the notebook you want to rename.
  4. Tap More and then Rename .
  5. Enter the new name. To change the emoji, tap the current emoji and select a new one.
Tip: If you rename a notebook or change the emoji in Gemini Apps, it will also be updated in NotebookLM.
Give instructions for your notebook

You can create detailed instructions for Gemini Apps, like how to format responses or the tone you want it to use.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app  .
  2. On the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Under "All Notebooks," tap the notebook you want to create instructions for.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Notebook settings .
  5. Add the instructions for your notebook and then tap Save.
Tip: Any instructions you add to a notebook in Gemini Apps will also be applied to the notebook in NotebookLM.
Pin or unpin a notebook

You can pin your frequently used notebooks for easy access.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app  .
  2. On the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Under "All Notebooks," tap the notebook you want to pin or unpin.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Pin or Unpin .

Your pinned notebooks appear at the top of your list of notebooks in Gemini Apps.

Delete a notebook

Important:

  • If you delete a notebook in Gemini Apps it will also delete the notebook in NotebookLM.
  • If you delete a notebook, any sources or chats that you added to that notebook will also be deleted. 
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app  .
  2. On the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Under "All Notebooks," tap the notebook you want to delete.
  4. At the top right, tap More and then Delete .

Add & manage sources

You can add different types of information to your notebook to provide Gemini Apps with deep context.

Supported source types

  • Files from your device: PDFs, documents, spreadsheets, images, audio,, text files, files, and .md files. .
  • Files from Google Drive.
  • Websites/URLs
  • Copied text

Tip: If you add, update, or delete a source for a notebook in Gemini apps, the source will also be added, updated, or deleted in NotebookLM.

How notebooks work with NotebookLM

Your notebook content automatically syncs between both Gemini Apps and NotebookLM. You can update your notebook in Gemini Apps or in NotebookLM.
