Frequently Asked Questions
-
What will I be charged for on my account?
We charge you for:
- Deploying a device/instance (billed hourly based on server type - see pricing page). Billing only starts once the device has completed installing the OS
- Servers that you Power Off will still incur standard hourly charges. Unlike a VM, your device is yours until you physically delete that machine and it can then be provisioned by another Packet customer
- Outbound Bandwidth usage charged at a flat rate of $0.05 per GB
What we DO NOT charge for:
- While billing is performed at a Project level, we do not charge you for having an active project (only active devices under a project are charged for). The project itself is FREE
- You can add as many collaborators as you wish to a project, FREE of charge
-
Am I charged for a server that is 'Powered Off'?
Yes. Even if you power off a device you have provisioned, you will still be charged the standard hourly rate for 'that' server Type. This device will remain 'yours' until you choose to delete it and cannot be provisioned or accessed by another Packet customer.
-
Which OS's do you Support?
Packet supports CoreOS, Ubuntu 14 LTS, CentOS 7, and Debian 7. We'll soon be adding RancherOS and RedHat Atomic Container Host.
-
How does Bandwidth Billing Work?
Network interfaces on your Packet servers are bonded and offer both private and public addresses. You are billed for any outbound bandwidth, at $0.05/GB, that leaves the Packet datacenter your server is located in. Bandwidth between servers (your servers or others at Packet!) in the same datacenter is free of charge.
-
What Kind of IP Addresses Do I Get?
Each Packet server is given a single public IPv4 address, a private IPv4 address (reachable only by other servers in the same project) and a public IPv6 address. Additional IP addresses are available on request.
-
What are Projects? How can I use them?
Packet lets you organize your servers within a Project. You can invite collaborators to your project to work with you on servers in that Project. There is no charge for creating a project. Projects also serve to define your private network -- allowing servers in the same Project to talk to each other over their private IPv4 address space.
