About the Internet Architecture Board

The Internet Architecture Board provides long-range technical direction for Internet development, ensuring the Internet continues to grow and evolve as a platform for global communication and innovation.

In its work, the IAB strives to:

Ensure that the Internet is a trusted medium of communication that provides a solid technical foundation for privacy and security, especially in light of pervasive surveillance,
Establish the technical direction for an Internet that will enable billions more people to connect, support the vision for an Internet of Things, and allow mobile networks to flourish, while keeping the core capabilities that have been a foundation of the Internet’s success, and
Promote the technical evolution of an open Internet without special controls, especially those which hinder trust in the network.

IAB Liaison Coordinator role established

The IAB has created a new Liaison Coordinator role as part of our effort to remodel our internal handling of our liaison oversight responsibility. With this effort, the IAB aims to maintain a better overview of all on-going liaison activities, to provide our liaison managers with better support, and be more actively involved when necessary as well as be able to react quickly as needed.

As already announced in the last IAB community report during IETF 110, this new role replaces the IAB’s previous internal shepherding structure but it does not change the nature of the liaison management roles as performed by the liaison managers. This new role is specifically intended to clarify communication with liaison managers and the community by providing a single contact point within the IAB. The Liaison Coordinator(s) can be contacted by sending mail to liaison-coordination@iab.org

The IAB has selected Wes Hardaker and Tommy Pauly to serve in the Liaison Coordinator role for the next year. The IAB will annually reevaluate who is selected to serve in this role during the March IETF when all the IAB roles are assigned.

As a next step, the Liaison Coordinators will also reach out to our liaison managers to advertise this change as well as collect input for other desired or needed improvements to the IAB’s liaison responsibilities.

Call for Feedback on Community Coordination Group Appointments

On behalf of the IETF, the IAB appoints three representatives to the Community Coordination Group (CCG), which provides advice and guidance to the IETF Trust in matters related to the IANA trademarks and the IANA domain names. The process for appointing these representatives is outlined in RFC 8090.

The current IETF-Selected members of the CCG and their terms of appointment are:

Russ Housley, 2019-2021
Barry Leiba, 2019-2021
Tim Wicinski, 2020-2022

Russ Housley and Barry Leiba’s terms end this year, and both have indicated that they are willing to continue in this role for the upcoming 2021-2023 term. Tim Wicinski’s term continues through the end of 2022.

The IAB is now soliciting input from the community on the incumbents up for potential reappointment: Russ Housley and Barry Leiba.

Internet Society Board of Trustees Appointments

The IAB is pleased to announce the appointment of Brian Haberman and Jon Peterson to the Internet Society Board of Trustees. They will be seated as trustees for three years, commencing with the 2021 Annual General Meeting of the Internet Society in July. The IAB thanks Brian and Jon for taking on this task.

The IAB would also like to thank all those who volunteered to serve or who provided feedback during this process.

Contract with Temporary RFC Series Project Manager has been extended to March 2022

The IAB has, based on the recommendation of RSOC, requested the Executive Director to extend the contract with the Temporary RFC Series Project Manager John Levine. The contract and SoW have been extended to March 2022 on the same terms and conditions. The Temporary RFC Series Project Manager is responsible for a subset of the tasks that are normally performed by the RFC Series Editor (RSE) while the RFC Editor Future Development Program is working on evolution of the RFC Editor model.

The IAB Liaison Oversight program

As per our charter, ‘[t]he IAB acts as representative of the interests of the IETF and the Internet Society in technical liaison relationships with other organizations concerned with standards and other technical and organizational issues relevant to the world-wide Internet'[1]. That representation is carried out by liaison managers, who are selected from the community by the IAB. Liaison managers are overseen by individual members of the IAB who act as shepherds (see also [2]).

Firstly, the IAB would like to note that this message is not intended to propose any changes to the liaison manager/shepherd system at this time, as the IAB believes that this representation works well.

In parallel to the liaison manager/shepherd system, the IAB is operating the Liaison Oversight program (see [3]). This program has been dormant for several years, and does not have a clear role to play in liaison management as of today. The program supported the IAB in developing the framework for liaison relationships and setting the requirements for the related IT systems but these activities were completed some time ago.

As part of the IAB effort to restructure its programs, the IAB is in the process of reviewing all open programs. Given the currently unclear function and role of the IAB Oversight program, the IAB has decided to conclude the program. Again, this will not impact the liaison management as performed today. Abstract: The Design Expectations vs. Deployment Reality in Protocol Development Workshop was convened by the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) in June 2019. This report summarizes the workshop’s significant points of discussion and identifies topics that may warrant further consideration.

Note that this document is a report on the proceedings of the workshop. The views and positions documented in this report are those of the workshop participants and do not necessarily reflect IAB views and positions.

IAB Seeks Feedback on Candidates for the IETF appointment to the ISOC Board of Trustees

In 2021, the IAB is responsible for selecting two individuals to serve 3-year terms on the ISOC Board of Trustees. The procedure is described in RFC 3677. The candidates who accepted nominations are:

The IAB is requesting feedback on these candidates by Wednesday, 2021-02-03 at 2359 UTC. Please send your response to execd@iab.org. If you would like your feedback to be anonymized, please indicate such in your response. The IAB expects to finalize its selection on or before 2021-02-24.

The IESG will confirm the candidates by 2021-03-24 and the appointees will begin serving as new board of trustees members at the ISOC Annual General meeting in July 2021.

IAB Reappoints Warren Kumari to the ICANN Technical Liaison Group

The Internet Architecture Board is pleased to announce the reappointment of Warren Kumari to a two-year term on the ICANN Technical Liaison Group.
