Over the next few weeks, 4.0 Solutions is putting together a series around, "AI in Industry 4.0: Past, Present, & Future". Before we get too far into the conversation, we want to understand something simple: What actually matters to you when it comes to the AI tools you currently use? Not what should matter. Not what a vendor says should matter. What actually determines whether a tool is useful enough to stay in your workflow? For some people, it’s accuracy. For others, it’s how well the tool fits into the way they already work. Security and data privacy may be the deciding factor. And for some, the honest answer may be: I don’t really have a requirement. I’m just using what’s available to me. That answer matters too. We’re trying to get a clearer picture of how people are actually using AI today before we start digging in deeper into the broader narrative. What is the #1 requirement for the AI tools you currently use? Vote below, and if your answer isn’t listed, drop it in the comments. #Industry40 #IndustrialAI #ArtificialIntelligence #SmartManufacturing #DigitalTransformation #Manufacturing #IndustrialAutomation #AgenticAI #40Solutions #WalkerReynolds

You don’t replace a 34-year-old PLC in eight hours by moving faster. You do it by knowing exactly what is going to happen before you touch the machine. That’s the part of Neuron Industries (YC S26) CureWood case study that I think matters most. The headline is obviously the eight-hour cutover. A 1991 Siemens S5 controlling a 300-point wood processing line, replaced in a single shift. But eight hours was not the real work. Eight hours was the result of doing the hard work before the shutdown window ever started. Neuron’s Cortex AIC autonomously carbon-copies the existing control logic, builds a digital model of the plant from the schematics, and gives the engineering team a way to test and validate the new system before they start pulling wires and changing hardware. That changes the nature of a brownfield retrofit. Traditionally, a huge part of the risk is uncertainty. What does this old logic actually do? What has been changed over the last 30 years? What isn’t documented? What does the guy who has maintained this machine for 20 years know that never made it into the drawings? The shorter you can make that list of unknowns before the line comes down, the less painful the actual migration becomes. That’s why the eight-hour number is interesting, not because somebody worked really fast for eight hours. Because they did enough work ahead of time that eight hours was all they needed on the machine. Tomorrow at 1:00 PM, Walker Reynolds sits down with Neuron co-founders Dennis Ren and Kenneth Rhee for Eight Hours to Modern: The Future of PLC Retrofits. They’re going to get into how they actually pulled this off, what the Cortex AIC is doing under the hood, and why they built it with the systems integrator in mind. If you work around legacy controls, brownfield plants, or PLC modernization, this is one I’d catch live. #IndustrialAutomation #PLCs #Brownfield #SystemsIntegration #Manufacturing #NeuronIndustries #40Solutions #WalkerReynolds

Eight Hours to Modern: The Future of PLC Retrofits In this episode, we sit down with Dennis Ren (CEO) and Kenneth Rhee (CTO), co-founders of Neuron Industries. Their product, the Cortex AIC, is an industrial AI controller built to retrofit aging PLC systems — and their flagship case study is hard to ignore: a 1991 Siemens S5 controlling a 300-point wood processing line, replaced in a single 8-hour cutover. We get into how Neuron autonomously carbon-copies legacy control logic, builds a digital plant model from schematics to test everything before touching live equipment, and hands operators a modern system with real-time visibility and native data integration — without the traditional migration pain. We also talk about who this is really built for (hint: it's the integrator), what the Cortex AIC actually does at the hardware level, and where Neuron is headed after closing their seed round.

What if you could put AI to work on the factory data you already have? Our friends at Itanta Analytics are hosting a webinar tomorrow focused on exactly that—using AI across live and historical manufacturing data to uncover deeper insights and create new applications for the plant floor. During the session, Itanta Analytics will introduce its agentic workflow and demonstrate how AI can work with existing industrial data to help manufacturers move beyond simply collecting and visualizing information toward actually extracting actionable intelligence from it. We spend a lot of time talking about the value of making industrial data accessible and usable. This is a great opportunity to see what becomes possible when AI is applied to that foundation. Put AI on the Data You Already Have Tuesday, September 15, 2026 9:00 AM Central Time Register for the webinar: https://lnkd.in/eTmdmiSi #Industry40 #IndustrialAI #Manufacturing #SmartManufacturing #ManufacturingData #DigitalTransformation #IIoT #AgenticAI #IndustrialData
Registration: https://lnkd.in/dUXWTWrR ---- Most manufacturers are not short on data. They are short on answers. Historians, SQL, SCADA, MES. All running, all collecting. Then someone asks why yield dropped on line three last quarter, and the answer takes an engineer, a spreadsheet and a week. That gap is what this session is about. On September 15 we are hosting a free 60 minute webinar with Itanta Analytics on putting AI on top of the data you already have. No rip and replace. No new data infrastructure. An OEE application from automotive production, walked end to end. A live demonstration, including how the platform connects to the historians you already run. A straight comparison against the way this gets done today. Ten minutes of questions. If you own an OEE or an energy number you have to defend, this one is aimed at you. Tuesday, September 15, 9:00 AM Central. Free and recorded.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. It is hard to believe a quarter century has passed. We remember where we were, what we were doing, and the moment we realized our country had been attacked. Most importantly, we remember the 2,977 people who lost their lives that day, their families, and the first responders who ran into buildings while everyone else was trying to get out. We also remember those who answered the call to serve in the years that followed. There is something else about September 11 worth remembering. In the days and weeks after the attacks, Americans came together in a way many of us have not seen since. We had differences then just as we do today, but for a time those differences became secondary to the fact that we were Americans. That matters to us at 4.0 Solutions. We are a team of men and women, veterans, first responders, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters from different backgrounds and walks of life. We don't agree on everything, nor should we, but there are foundational ideas about this country that we believe in. The Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights, among them Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. It also says governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. The Constitution begins with three important words: "We the People." The Bill of Rights protects something just as fundamental: the freedom to speak, believe, question and express ideas without fear that government can silence you for disagreeing. Freedom of speech matters because freedom requires the ability to think and speak for yourself. So does man's freedom of will — the right to make choices about his own life, pursue his own path, accept responsibility and determine what kind of life he wants to build. America is not perfect, and never has been. But those principles are still worth striving toward: liberty, equality under the law, representative government, freedom of speech, individual freedom and opportunity. That is directly connected to why 4.0 Solutions exists. We believe a strong middle class is fundamental to a strong United States. People should have the opportunity to learn valuable skills, build careers, provide for their families and create opportunities for the next generation. American manufacturing has played an enormous role in making that possible. 4.0 Solutions is a proud American company, and our mission is to save and create middle class jobs in the United States by teaching engineers, technologists and executives how to leverage technology to do more with less. That's not just something we put on a website. It's why we do what we do. But today isn't about us. On the 25th anniversary of September 11, we remember those we lost, honor those who served, and remember that despite our differences, there is still far more that should unite us than divide us. We are Americans. We will never forget.

UNS + Knowledge Graphs: LIVE Q&A with Walker Reynolds Thursday 9/3 at 12:00 PM CDT, Walker Reynolds is going LIVE to bring the Atlas build full circle. In Tuesday’s “Is This What’s Missing?” video, Walker broke down the relationship between the Unified Namespace and knowledge graphs: the UNS as the real-time data backbone, and the knowledge graph as the layer that gives those connections meaning. Tomorrow, he’s opening it up live. Walker will walk through what he built with Flow Software Inc. Atlas, dig deeper into where knowledge graphs fit in the industrial architecture, and answer your questions. If you’re trying to understand how the UNS, knowledge graphs, and agentic AI fit together, bring your questions. Thursday, September 3 12:00 PM CDT LIVE with Walker Reynolds The UNS gives you the flow of information. Atlas gives you the map of meaning across that flow.

A Unified Namespace can tell you what is happening in the plant. The harder problem is teaching a system what all of it actually means. That distinction is becoming a hell of a lot more important as manufacturers start trying to put AI agents on top of their industrial data. A UNS gives us the real-time backbone. It moves information, contextualizes it, normalizes it, and organizes it semantically. Equipment has parents and children. Assets have siblings. Current state moves through the architecture in a way that people and systems can consume. But manufacturing is made up of relationships that go far beyond “contains.” This pump feeds that process. This material belongs to that work order. This motor was installed on three different lines over six months. This operator was running the machine when quality changed. This valve limits that piece of equipment. This batch used material from this supplier lot. The meaning lives in those relationships. That is what Flow Software Inc. has been building with Atlas. Atlas is exactly what the name implies: a map of how the operation is connected. It is a type-based knowledge modeling layer designed to capture the people, assets, materials, processes, systems, history, and relationships that describe how an operation actually works. Instead of burying that understanding inside integrations, documentation, SOPs, or somebody’s head, Atlas turns it into something people, applications, and AI agents can query and reason across. Walker Reynolds recently spent several hours kicking the tires on the beta, taking a simulated melt shop from a Unified Namespace into a working knowledge graph. One of the things that stood out was not simply that an agent could query the graph, but that Atlas could use types to reason across similar assets and begin turning tribal knowledge into reusable knowledge. That is where this gets interesting. For years, industry has worked on getting the data connected. The next problem is making all of that connected data understandable without rebuilding the meaning every damn time somebody wants to create another application, dashboard, analytics project, or AI use case. Atlas takes the plant from “what is happening?” to “how is all of this connected?” Flow describes the distinction pretty simply: existing systems store the data. Atlas stores what that data means. Atlas is still in beta, but it is coming very soon, and this is one we think the industrial community needs to start paying attention to. The UNS gives you the flow of information. Atlas gives you the map of meaning across that flow. Neither replaces the other. Together, they start giving people, applications, and AI a much more complete understanding of how the plant actually works. #FlowSoftware #Atlas #UnifiedNamespace #KnowledgeGraphs #IndustrialAI #AgenticAI #Manufacturing #Industry40 #40Solutions #WalkerReynolds
