At PostHog, we're working to increase the number of successful products in the world. Until now, tools for building products have been fragmented. Product analytics, heatmaps, session recording, web analytics, feature flags, and A/B testing are all helpful, but no one wants to buy, send data to, and integrate multiple products. PostHog offers these tools (and more) in an integrated, open source platform which can be hosted in either the US or EU. Both versions are SOC2 certified, GDPR-ready, and HIPAA compliant. We started PostHog during Y Combinator's W20 cohort and had the most successful B2B software launch on Hacker News since 2012 - with a product that was just 4 weeks old. With over 100,000 users, we're default alive, growing 97% through word of mouth, and we are in the top 0.01% most popular repos on GitHub.

When we launched our self-serve flow about a month ago, we started tracking how users were moving through it. We noticed a meaningful drop-off between creating a workspace and starting onboarding, so I started looking into how we could use onboarding emails to bring users back and help them complete it. We were looking at platforms like Customer.io and Loops when I came across PostHog Workflows. I hadn't used it before, but it made sense since all our product events were already in PostHog. I then connected the PostHog MCP to Claude and used it to look at the funnel and understand how long users who completed onboarding typically took to move through it. Based on that, we worked out the timing for the emails. Claude then built the workflow in PostHog and helped draft the emails, with me providing the product context and messaging. The first email goes out a couple of hours after signup if someone hasn't started onboarding, followed by a couple of reminders. If they complete onboarding along the way, they automatically drop out of the sequence.

Took a break from helping customers to write about how I got good at helping customers. If you're one of my customers you didn't see this.

PostHog's vision for where software is going in 2030 helped me understand how I can build products today that are preparing us for the future I did a deep dive analysis of PostHog’s product (something I LOVE doing) and recorded the full walkthrough PostHog is open source, so I went into their repo, then compared the two component libraries behind its current app and newer agent experiences. It even tells coding agents which one to use, where to find existing components, and what to do if a component is missing. That level of detail is incredible. As agents start building more of the interface, the little product decisions that used to live in a designer’s or engineer’s head need to be somewhere the agent can find them. 🦔 james hawkins and the whole PostHog team, amazing to see you open source everything you build! Full walkthrough in the comments :)
