Earlier in my career, I was part of the quality team that helped shipped Forza Horizon 2. Over a decade later, I had the opportunity to contribute to the most recent title in the franchise, Forza Horizon 6 (and have since spent more time playing it than I will admit..). That contrast has me reflecting on how much AAA games have changed, not just technically, but in what they are and what we expect them to be. The games we bought in the early 2000s were largely finished experiences. They shipped on a disc, and that disc was the product. Day-one patches existed, but they were the exception, not the norm. Today, many AAA titles feel more like platforms than products. Launch is the starting point, not the finish line. Roadmaps, seasonal content, and ongoing community feedback extend development years beyond release. It is not a criticism. Many franchises do this exceptionally well. But it fundamentally changes what “shipping a game” means. Scale has evolved too. Worlds that would have been groundbreaking twenty years ago are now the baseline. What once felt cinematic now feels like an entirely different medium. So I keep coming back to a simple question: Have games gotten better, or just bigger? The ambition behind modern game development is huge, and so is the complexity of building and testing at this scale. It is one of the hardest challenges in entertainment today. Which raises a final thought: Is “launch as a starting line” simply the new normal, or is there something about that finished-on-a-disc era still worth holding onto? For many of us in game development, it starts with a single game. For Jimmy Bischoff, Head of Quality, that game was NHL 95. What began as time spent competing with friends turned into curiosity about how games are built, and eventually into a career in the industry. Those early experiences continue to shape how we think about player experience today. They’re a reminder that behind every game we test and every bug we find, there’s a player experience that matters.

Studios Quality is proud to be part of Qualicon 2026 on May 20-21, joining quality leaders and professionals from across the global games industry for two days of collaboration, insight, and forward-looking discussion. This year’s event features an incredible lineup of speakers from Xbox Game Studios and across the industry, covering topics that continue to shape the future of game quality. We’re especially looking forward to sessions including: • Chelsi Hohnbaum’s talk, “Telemetry that works: lessons from across XGS,” exploring how teams can build telemetry systems that are reliable, actionable, and aligned across disciplines. • Tim Marshall’s session, “Torque about data,” sharing practical approaches to scalable quality reporting and analytics grounded in real production experience from Forza. • Michael Leslie and Ryan Johnson’s discussion on creating automation and actionable insights with limited support, highlighting practical ways QA teams can unlock more value through automation. • Hakim Ronaque’s session, “Pause with purpose: a playbook for trust and strategic alignment,” focused on leadership, communication, and building stronger alignment across teams. • Georgia Mae Ayling, who will be joining the panel discussion on effectively communicating the value of QA to studio stakeholders. We’re also excited to hear from Qualicon Content Committee Co-Chairs Jimmy Bischoff of Xbox Game Studios and Pierre Jouen of Ubisoft, whose combined experience and leadership continue to help shape quality practices across the industry. Qualicon continues to be an important space for conversations that move the industry forward, and we’re looking forward to being part of it.
