It was never about wallets, or digital identity. It’s about issuing digital credentials (or more generally records) that can be used and recognized downstream. This also includes the ability to transform an existing issued credential (such as a passport) into another form without losing fidelity or control, as in this case, a ‘Digital ID’ as Apple is calling it. When you strip away all of the tech, it’s not about wallets, or even credentials - it’s about ‘claims’ that have been issued to you in various forms, then which you can present in various forms under your exclusive control. The market is doing what it does best: creating something that users actually want. But that does not diminish the importance of the underpinning policy framework. Let’s see how this goes. But if policymakers think they are product owners, or product owners think they are policymakers, it will not go smoothly. Let’s work together!
