Simon Sinek shared thisSay "cheese" and you get a smile. Say "prune" and you get cheekbones. A Bit of Optimism is taking a brief hiatus, and we'll be back with brand-new episodes in a few weeks. Until then, we're revisiting some of our favorite conversations, starting with one of the most fun we've ever had: Rob Lowe. What I love about Rob is that he plays the game with a wink, and reminds us all to take the work seriously—just never too seriously. 🎧 Listen to the full episode of A Bit of Optimism wherever you get your podcasts.

Simon Sinek shared thisTrue leadership is more than something we do at work. It's the daily choice to take responsibility for the people in our care. But what does that actually mean in practice? Simon Sinek shared this"I'm an anxious person." "I'm an avoidant." "I'm just bad at this." Listen to how you describe yourself for a day. Then count how many of those start with "I am." As a psychotherapist, Amy Morin tells clients to try trading the being verb for a habit—“I have a tendency to,” “I do this sometimes.” It sounds like a technicality, but it isn't. A tendency is something you can change next time. An identity is something you live up to. What's one "I am" you'd swap? This episode of A Bit of Optimism is brought to you by SAP 🎧 Check out the full episode wherever you get your podcasts!

Simon Sinek shared thisIt is better to have a great team than a team of greats. The ability of a group of people to do remarkable things hinges on how well those people can pull together. For more, check out: https://lnkd.in/g4WHRHjZ Video from ServiceTitan's North Star Summit

Simon Sinek shared thisWe're told to stop worrying, but nobody ever tells us when to start. Amy Morin is a psychotherapist and the author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do. Her favorite exercise with clients starts from the opposite premise: worry gets a time and a place. Fifteen minutes in the calendar. And when it’s up, it’s up. What I love about it is that you’re not denying or suppressing anything. You’re just allocating time for all that very healthy nonsense. 🎧 Listen to the full episode of A Bit of Optimism wherever you get your podcasts.

After 14 published novels, here's what I've learned about escalating conflict in fiction. It's not about mining your own fears. It's about understanding your protagonist's stakes. When I approach conflict escalation, I ask three questions. What's at risk for my character? What are the consequences of failure? What do they long for, and how can I make it harder to achieve? Once I have clarity on the stakes, I layer in obstacles. Some are physical, some emotional, some mental, some spiritual. The key is grounding the escalation in your story's circumstances, not creating conflict in a vacuum. This craft approach has served me across mystery novels and helped countless students strengthen their plotting. Stakes drive everything. #WritingCraft #FictionWriting #NovelWriting #AuthorLife #WritingCommunity

Boots on the ground: you've read this, about the LRE and how it prioritizes so-called inclusion over language development, before. but what does it actually LOOK like? Thanks to this post, by Wyatt Hall, I just registered for the NAD forum this Sunday, and am looking forward to it. I urge you to do the same. Facts: Case 1) Three profoundly Deaf students, all brimming with intelligence, all from non-signing, hearing families. All attended the same public school district where they had exposure to first SEE signs in preschool, then ASL in elementary K-3, but with SEE used by the school SLP, who had a powerful presence on campus. In their self contained DHH class with a Deaf teacher, their language soars, and so do their academic skills, happiness, and expressive skills. But their families still don't sign and the larger public school setting is hearing. The hours they have ASL and meaningful communication is small in comparison to their hours outside of that classroom. By third grade, all three have transferred to a local Deaf school (two have had to involve an advocate to fight for their transfer.) All three are placed in the "Special Needs" department at that Deaf school. Their issues, which landed them in Special Needs at the Deaf school (a markedly different program than the "General Ed" program), are likely language-deprivation based. Case 2) A hard of hearing student starts the Deaf school in 8th grade. She uses SEE, feels disconnected from her Deaf-identified peers, and has been told negative things about the Deaf school for years. Now, she stands out there and struggles socially, unable to overcome the barriers that years in the mainstream have created, linguistically and attitudinally. Case 3) Two students, both hard of hearing, are absolutely brilliant as children; one with a deep hunger and love of language acquisition, and the other with charisma, energy and potential bursting at the seams. Both grow up in a mainstream district, where DHH staff is hired very haphazardly: some use SEE, a few ASL, and some TOD's barely sign at all. Interpreters also vary in their skill level and almost no staff are Deaf. The first student commits suicide as a teenager. The other, now an adult, has never held a job and has a reading/writing level of around 1 grade. The potential both had, in my opinion, was squelched severely by the mainstream system they were being educated in. I believe the down-grading of these lives were avoidable. Had they attended the Deaf school only an hour away, when younger, it could have been transformative for them. I've seen first hand the stunning, rapid positive impact Deaf schools have on students. Their self esteem, language fluency, thinking skills and life potential soar in a TRULY accessible environment...and this transformation often happens within months. Wyatte C. Hall, Ph.D. is correct and its important. As a sytemic approach, is it right to count on children overcoming years of internal damage?

Scanning for meaningful research studies in a sea of press releases and study abstracts is like turning over cards in a game. Sometimes the missing ace comes up; more often, you have to tunnel through flimsy exercises and glossy distractions. How can you tell when you've stumbled on something truly meaningful?
