Eric Notkin liked thisEric Notkin liked thisNew Adventures After many… many... years of new and old (and new again) relationships, learning and growing and succeeding side by side, supporting and buoying teams through difficult times, and proudly watching peers and mentees grow and move on... I've now retired from what has been so much more to me than just a job, and to do so knowing I chose (or fell into) the perfect career... for me. Hopefully, I was as valuable to those I worked and partnered with along the way as the experiences were for me. 40 years in HR is a long, long ride.. and an amazingly wild and rewarding one. And, while there is no way to remember every story, event, achievement, or letdown, I will definitely remember… and treasure every smile, laugh and honest interaction... and cherish the comraderies so many gifted me. So… as I move beyond “career” and into my next new adventures, I wish all of my peers (peeps) over the years every success in your careers and well into whatever your personal beyonds entail. All the best to you… be well! "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." - Winnie the Pooh (A.A.Milne)

Eric Notkin liked thisI want to recognize Mayor Steven Del Duca for what he is: one of the strongest allies of the Jewish community at any level of government, anywhere in Canada. I’m tremendously grateful for his unwavering support. I only wish more of our leaders showed this same courage and fortitude. Thank you, Steven.Eric Notkin liked thisOn Monday, I spoke with CP24 following the shooting outside a Belleville synagogue on Yom Kippur - the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. I spoke about the rise in antisemitism and Jew hatred in Canada, the need for action from all levels of government, and the responsibility we all share to defend the values that define this country. My message is clear: Canada is a country built on tolerance, respect for others and peaceful coexistence. If you reject those values, then Canada is not the place for you. We cannot allow hate and intolerance to become normalized in this country. Leaders at every level have a responsibility to speak up and take action. Eric Notkin reacted on thisEric Notkin reacted on thisAbsolutely chilling. Belleville Police Service Chief Murray Rodd confirmed today that Sunday night’s shooting outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue was a hate-motivated crime. “Make no mistake, this was a targeted attack against the Jewish community.” Police say the gunman yelled, “You’re going to die for the Jews” before opening fire on Constable Jeff Smith. Constable Smith, who was stationed outside the synagogue protecting members of the Jewish community gathered for Kol Nidre, was shot multiple times but continued to engage the attacker. Less than three minutes later, Constable Michael McCurdy arrived and immediately moved toward the danger. Chief Rodd said the actions of both officers prevented what could have become an “unimaginable tragedy.” Constable Jeff Smith and Constable Michael McCurdy are heroes. They put themselves directly in harm’s way protecting a synagogue filled with Jewish worshippers on the holiest day of the Jewish year. We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. We continue to pray for Constable Smith as he remains in critical condition. This is where we are in Canada. Every Canadian should be shaken to their core by it.

And the shooting in Belleville shows why. I’m grateful to the police officer in Belleville for protecting the congregation. My heart goes out to the congregation of the Sons of Jacob synagogue. And I hope this isn’t the normal in Canada forevermore. For 29 years, The Legal 500 has been analyzing the capabilities of law firms across the world. The GC Powerlist is the latest publication from The Legal 500, turning its attention to the in-house function, and recognizing those corporate counsel who are driving the legal business forward. The latest edition is the GC Powerlist: Canada, which identifies an array of the most influential and innovative in-house counsel working in those jurisdictions. We have canvassed opinions from law firm partners and in-house counsel across Canada, to identify corporate counsel that have been instrumental in changing or forming opinions within their company or industry; developing brilliant technical solutions to complex issues; creating innovative structures to ensure that the in-house function is driving the business forward; or providing a business working model that other corporate counsel should follow. Our team of experienced researchers assessed the nominations, speaking both to general counsel and nominating lawyers to finalise each list. GC Powerlist: Canada features not just information on why that individual has made the list, but also comment from those in-house lawyers about how they have helped shape innovation in the legal industry.
We hope that this listing will stimulate debate around the role of the in-house lawyer and help corporate counsel with possible improvements and efficiencies in running their departments.

Fascinating and sophisticated guidance on what constitutes "access" to a controlled technology from outside of Canada from my colleagues John Boscariol and Oksana Migitko (and Global Affairs Canada). I've rolled my eyes at privacy legislation / regulators that conflate physical location with accessibility / disclosure. BC FIPPA is one. And the federal privacy commissioner still requires express notice of risk: "Organizations must be transparent about their personal information handling practices. This includes advising customers that their personal information may be sent to another jurisdiction for processing and that while the information is in another jurisdiction it may be accessed by the courts, law enforcement and national security authorities." (https://lnkd.in/gEV5Qjrq). But that is not always a material risk. As it applies to the export of controlled technology: "GAC emphasizes that the key factor in the “disclosure” analysis is whether there is a reasonable possibility that someone outside Canada could access or examine the technology. If no such possibility exists, then a “transfer” is not considered to have occurred. Notably, the Guidance highlights that the mere fact that some of the Canadian entity’s servers are located in foreign jurisdictions may increase the possibility of unauthorized access; however, this alone is not sufficient to establish a reasonable possibility of disclosure. The presence of servers abroad must be considered alongside other factors, which will be discussed in more detail in the section below." "In contrast, a transfer is not considered to occur when: A Canadian company moves controlled technology from a server in Canada to a server in another country using strong, industry-standard encryption, and manages the encryption keys so that there is only a remote possibility of access by individuals outside Canada;" https://lnkd.in/gaVkhajY
