Peter Cresswell reposted thisPeter Cresswell reposted this"Blocked" isn't a column on a Kanban board. It's not a work state. Blocked is an attribute of a work item. Not the state of the work itself. A story can be In Development... and blocked. In Review... and blocked. Ready for Test... and blocked. When you drag a card into a "Blocked" column, you erase where the work actually stalled. A story blocked in Development and a story blocked in Review are two different problems. A single "Blocked" column collapses them into one. It gets worse. Many tools stop attributing aging to the actual workflow state. Review looks healthy. Development looks healthy. The delay gets buried in a generic "Blocked" bucket. You lose visibility into where work is really accumulating. Yes, some teams use a Blocked column deliberately. It's a visual alarm. A forcing function because blocked flags often get ignored. That's a legitimate tradeoff. But recognize the cost. Blocked is a flag. A tag. A color. A marker on the card while it remains in its actual workflow state. Blocked is a flag, not a destination. Don't move the work. Move the signal.

Observability is one of my preferred topics and it’s an area that I think businesses are really sleeping on. Observability is incredibly valueable in an AI world. You need to be constantly closing loops (there’s that word again) with AI and your production loop is arguably your most important loop (besides your customer feedback loop but arguably, the one may be a proxy for the other).

Peter Cresswell liked thisPeter Cresswell liked thisI can’t believe it, but yesterday was my last day at Match Group. It’s been a fantastic 8+ year run at the world’s largest & best matchmaker. My first 5 were leading Plenty of Fish in Vancouver, then 3.5 leading Match Group Asia here in Singapore. I will miss having the most interesting job at any party. Everyone around the world knows Tinder, and everyone has stories and opinions to share about dating, marriage, and birth rates. My experiences from leading our central AI team over the past year also became a hot topic. I will also miss the daily work itself. A fascinating blend of engineering, AI, product design, brand & performance marketing, and finance. Creativity and logic. Heart and head. Most of all I will miss the many wonderful individuals truly dedicated to helping people find real connections. It was a mission of which I was always proud and found deeply motivating. Thank you, Amarnath Thombre, for hiring me into Match Group and for years of mentorship. Thank you, Bernard Kim, for the life-changing opportunity to lead the Asia team. And thank you, Spencer Rascoff, for your decisive leadership and support. What’s next? My family and I are staying in Singapore, and I’m taking the summer off. As a member of the club’s biomechanics team, she supports research focused on player performance, movement, and sports science. “Working with the Jays provided me with my first taste of professional sport,” Bossom says. “It got me really excited for this next opportunity and for the future.
