Sailing into the sunset*
The professional chapter of my life is coming to a close, and an entirely new one is starting. After my 10½ years at Facebook, my wife
Jayne and I are moving onboard a boat, and setting out on an adventure to sail the world.
They say that a day at Meta feels like a week, but I can also assert that my job here has felt like a whole career. The project I was hired to work on in 2011 was cancelled just as I graduated bootcamp - so I quickly learned to embrace ambiguity.
After a few years on the Facebook Mobile Platform, I volunteered to reboot our neglected open source program. React, Presto, Jest, PyTorch and several hundred other projects later, this went quite well. Then, focusing on developer tools, I helped with our IDE, source control, and code quality teams. In 2017, consumer hardware: I switched to be an IC, learned Android, and helped hack together what soon became Portal. And in 2019, I moved to help with the company's internal data infrastructure, with
Aparna,
Paul, Barak, and a truly once-in-a-lifetime team.
I'd like to think I've finished my professional career on a high. But from next Friday, I will be back down at the bottom of a very steep new learning curve, getting schooled all over again - this time by the ocean. Follow our adventures on https://lnkd.in/g9KgmBSP

(* On average we will indeed be going around the globe westwards, but it's much safer to sail during the day. Unfortunately "sailing away from the sunrise" doesn't have the same ring to it.)
