Brandy Richardson liked thisBrandy Richardson liked thisEveryone is telling CFOs to become more strategic. Boards want it. Consultants sell it. I want to push back. You cannot be strategic on top of a broken operational foundation. 77% of CFOs say they're involved in enterprise-wide strategy. 68% spend less than 40% of their time on it. That gap is not a mindset issue. It's what happens when your close cycle takes 12 days. When your AP team is chasing invoices manually. When your FP&A analyst spent 4 days pulling data before spending 1 day analyzing it. Strategy requires headspace. Headspace requires operational freedom. Operational freedom requires a finance function that doesn't need the CFO to hold it together. The conversation shouldn't be "how do I think more strategically." It should be "what do I need to fix so that strategic thinking becomes possible." Becoming strategic is not a decision. It's a consequence of building the right infrastructure underneath you.

The engagement was led by an all-women core team, marking a rare milestone in the history of chapter 11. Led by partners Debra Sinclair, Robin Spigel, Allyson Smith and Charlotta Chung, and associate Betsy Feldman, the Willkie team guided Saks through one of the most complex retail restructurings in recent history, enabling the company to exit bankruptcy having reduced its debt by nearly 75% and gained the liquidity necessary to support its operations and invest in its future. Vera Bradley have expanded into apparel via a licensing deal with Li & Fung. Tops. Outerwear. Holiday 2026. Macy's, Nordstrom, Dillard's, club and off-price. This isn't a line extension. It's a category transformation. The talent that built Vera Bradley's bag and home business is not the same talent you need to run a multigenerational apparel line across five channels at $88 - $298 retail. Different product. Different buyer. Different operational complexity. Li & Fung's licensed apparel portfolio is growing impressively fast, Sanctuary, Loft, C&C California, Pendleton, now Vera Bradley. That's a serious book of business to run. Licensed brand operators who understand channel strategy, product development and wholesale account management are not easy to find.
