Chase Donnelly liked thisChase Donnelly liked thisI stayed at my last employer five years longer than I should have. In early 2025, I was laid off. The raises were real. The RSU grants were real. And I believe both of them put a target on my back. That’s not something I understood until I was already on the other side of it. Every year I stayed, my comp went up. I even got raises after internal equity surveys flagged that I was underpaid relative to my peers. Every review cycle added another layer of seniority. On paper it looked like success. Inside the company it probably looked different, a long-tenure employee at the top of their pay band, holding a role a junior hire could do for a fraction of the cost. All of my peers who had been there for more than 9 or more years were let go too. When headcount reductions come to a large tech company, they don’t always cut the lowest performers. They run spreadsheets. High earners who can be replaced cheaper are often the first names on the list. I see the same pattern now in the enterprise software professionals I talk to every week. Twelve years in the industry. Consistently strong reviews. Multiple rounds of RSU grants. And they’re nine months into a search they didn’t see coming. The lesson I took from my own experience: staying too long at a high comp level in a large tech company isn’t a reward. It’s a risk you’re not always pricing in. I’m from the generation stuck between “stay at a company for life” and “move every few years for a raise.” I landed in the middle and played by the old rules. Now the market rewards mobility more than loyalty. That’s not cynical. It’s just how the math works. I wish I’d known that a few years earlier.

Chase Donnelly liked thisArchitectural photography cost sharing is hard. But when it is built around bringing people together first, it gets a lot easier. The focus shifts to the people, products, and organizations involved: their marketing needs, their reasons for participating, their business goals. After all, in the creation of any structure or space, companies show up in all kinds of ways. Some take on bigger roles, some smaller. Some are design-forward, others the functional, unsung heroes. For one company, a project can be portfolio-defining. For another, it may be one of many strong projects in a deep body of work. Most cost shares do not account for those differences. One-size-fits-all cost sharing does not work well when every company shows up differently and needs something different. That is where Shared Construction Content (SCC) comes in. SCC makes cost shares flexible, tailored, and workable for the full project team. The Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex photoshoot brought seven companies into one cost share, more than double the typical three parties (architect, general contractor, interior designer). Each company could choose the images that made sense for them, scaling participation up or down based on their specific requirements. That is what happens when a cost share is focused on bringing people and organizations together. Thank you, Ed White for bringing in SCC to manage this cost share and for creating such beautiful work. Thank you as well to Eva Leung and Frances Cartmel for commissioning the photography and for your partnership in making this cost share a success. R.O.W.W: Reach Out WorldWide (ROWW) - consisting of skilled volunteers - is a non-profit registered 501(c)3 organization. While part of a relief team responding to the massive earthquakes that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010; Actor/Producer Paul Walker saw a gap between the availability of skilled resources and the requirement for such personnel in post-disaster situations. Following the trip he contacted a group of his friends to assist him in forming ROWW with the purpose of filling this unmet need.
ROWW is a network of committed professionals with first responder skill-set (including project management, logistics, heavy equipment operation, EMT, paramedic, firefighting, and healthcare, etc). The volunteers provide their expertise when disasters strike and augment local resources with the goal of accelerating relief efforts on a worldwide basis. ROWW has developed Standard Operating Procedures that facilitate arriving quickly, clearing access, providing basic necessities and medical assistance to ease the survivors' pain and bringing hope in the bleakest of circumstances.
