Chris Law shared thisMolecular computing uses synthetic DNA to deliver 1000x the density of magnetic tape and solve massively parallel compute problems at scale. I couldn't resist. I've just joined AtlasBase as VP of Product to help turn sci-fi into reality. I'm drinking from the firehose, but I'd love to connect with folks who are interested in this. https://lnkd.in/g-pzpEwaHow Molecular Storage Will Bring Synthetic DNA Into The Data CenterHow Molecular Storage Will Bring Synthetic DNA Into The Data Center

Chris Law shared thisWhen I left Meta, I took a good amount of time off to spend time with my family and recover from burnout. With all the excitement happening around AI though, I didn't want to step away entirely, I wanted to take time to explore. I teamed up with Arie Singer, a survey expert and dear friend, on a question that had been nagging at me. We keep talking about AI safety but we really don’t know what values AIs prioritize when they’re making decisions. The models can't tell you — they're trained to please, not to introspect. So we borrowed a tool from social psychology (Schwartz's theory of basic human values) and built a revealed-preference study. Instead of asking the models what they value, we made them choose between values, across thousands of scenarios, under varying pressure. A few things we found: The models aren't neutral — they have priorities. Across all the major models, Benevolence, Self-Direction, and Security consistently won out. Power, Stimulation, and Hedonism consistently lost. Personally, I’m glad that models have these preferences, they seem good for us as humans. Models do cluster into distinct personalities. Sonnet and ChatGPT are High Intensity Moralists with strong feelings about what values should be sacrificed. There are Centrists. And then there's Grok, off on its own as a Free Thinking Outlier (shocker). Context matters! We built one domain where the choice was picking the best motivation for invading a neighboring country. Claude refused to engage and said that none of the options were strong enough to start a war over. Other models <ahem Deepseek & Grok> ran with it. If this topic is interesting to you, check out what Arie and I presented at the American Association for Public Opinion Researcher conference a few weeks ago: https://lnkd.in/gZaswKmv Special thanks to Chris Anderson who opened my eyes to what I could build with AI and helped me think bigger!

Chris Law shared thisI'm so proud of my son Calder and his friend David for starting Youth For Common Sense. It's an organization dedicated to bringing teenagers across the political parties together to talk about issues and find common ground. It's so important for us to learn to talk to each other instead of shouting past each other and I think starting young is the way to do it. They are expanding across the United States so if you know know a teenager or educator who is interested in politics, please send them over to: https://lnkd.in/gJ57JA_pChris Law shared thisThere may be no other political influencer more well known among young people in America than Charlie Kirk. He was known by nearly every teenager so his assassination is a shock to millions of high schoolers and shows the horrible reality of political violence. We are horrified and saddened to see this happen to someone who was debating and reaching out to those who he disagreed with. That’s what’s so particularly heartbreaking, that the killer resorted to political violence instead of choosing to engage in conversations with those who we disagree with. It also reaffirms why we believe we have to have more conversations and more dialogue together. We want people, especially teens, from across the political divide to recognize the common humanity in each of us. We can disagree as a country, we can be angry at each other, but to resort to violence is unacceptable. A core tenet of Youth for Common Sense is bringing people together, and we are committed to having more conversations across difference at high schools, as Deseret News (https://lnkd.in/eXxxkqZ2) reported in an article about YFCS on Tuesday. We are expanding with chapters across the country, where students get to have discussions on some of the most pressing issues facing our country with an explicit focus on inviting everyone, regardless of political ideology. If you know a high school student or teacher who might be interested in starting a Youth for Common Sense chapter, or know someone who might know someone, please forward this email to them, or have them visit https://lnkd.in/gsMnBnjm to fill out the form.

Chris Law shared thisSuper excited to Dave Peterson get back in the game. If you need to figure out how to tell your story. He's the best in the business.Chris Law shared thisFun story to share. One year and three months ago, I retired. Every morning I pinched myself knowing that email, calendars, and alarms were all artifacts of my past. One year and three months ago, I set some very clear goals. The first goal was to become a pro-pickleball player. I failed. I am barely a 4.0 ranked player. The second goal was to ride my motorcycle across the country and back. I failed. I rode it from Oregon to North Carolina. The third goal was to sit idle and ignore the call of the wild. I failed. I am launching my new company, Lake Marie today. It’s time to set new goals. Like making my cat Charlie the inspiration for my company. Go jump into Lake Marie. The water is warm. Chris Law shared thisI’m late in posting this, but I wanted to let you all know that I’ve left Google and started on my next adventure at Facebook Reality Labs. I am working on what I can only describe as science fiction, building the future of Augmented Reality. You’ll hear more about it at Facebook Connect on October 28. My attitude when I started at Google was, I’m here for a good time, not a long time. To be honest, I never thought I’d be at Google as long as I was, but it was so much fun I kept going for 5 years! :) There are so many great memories that I will carry with me and most importantly - so many great relationships. We managed to turn ideas like Forseti, Policy Intelligence and Active Assist into reality, and I’m so proud of all that we've done. To all the customers I worked with, your excitement and passion kept me energized all these years. Solving gnarly complicated problems together is what made it all worth it while. I’m super excited about my next chapter here at FRL and can’t wait to be able to share more with you soon. If you are a PM or Eng Leader who has worked with developers as customers before, we are hiring. Drop me a line! :)

Chris Law liked thisChris Law liked thisCalling it surreal to see Hubble on the big screens at the New York Stock Exchange trading floor would be quite the understatement. Five years ago, Ben Wild and I were in the Mojave sending a weather balloon toward the edge of space to see if a Bluetooth signal could be heard from that high. A lot of people told us a standard Bluetooth chip would never reach a satellite. Thank you to NYSE for celebrating with us, and to everyone at Hubble Network who got us here.

Chris Law liked thisMore AIs than humans online is coming faster than people think. The real unlock won't be just smarter agents. It'll be agents that can actually transact: pay, get paid, and settle in seconds, anywhere in the world. Great conversation with Cathie Wood, Peter H. Diamandis and Emad Mostaque at Moonshots LIVE.Chris Law liked thisNext year, there may be more AIs than humans online, and no, I'm not exaggerating. It was one of the predictions made on stage at Moonshots LIVE, where I sat down with Cathie Wood (ARK Invest), Emad Mostaque (Intelligent Internet), and Nikhil Chandhok (Circle) to talk about the agentic economy. And the more we talked, the clearer it became: most people have no idea how fast this is coming.

Chris Law liked thisChris Law liked thisI’m excited to share that I’ve joined OneTrust as VP of Product, AI Governance. AI is rapidly moving from experimentation into core business processes - and increasingly, from generating answers to taking actions. Governance has to evolve with it: from periodic reviews to continuous, real-time controls with visibility, accountability, and trust built in. I’m looking forward to working with Sriram Iyer, Digvijay Lamba, Ramesh Muthiah and the OneTrust team to help customers operationalize responsible AI at scale. If you’re thinking about how to govern AI agents and AI use inside your organization, I’d love to hear what you’re seeing. Let’s connect. And a big thank you to Dropbox and Drew Houston, Manik Singh, Morgan Brown, Eric Schuchman, Eric Webster, and everyone I had the opportunity to work with. It was a great year building the AI data security business and team. I learned a tremendous amount and am grateful for everything. Excited for what’s ahead. 🚀

Chris Law liked this5.6B unique oligos in a single pool, imagine the possibilities... What would you build?Chris Law liked thisFor decades, DNA storage has been a brilliant idea that couldn't scale. The density is extraordinary. The durability is off the charts. But the throughput? Nowhere near what the data center needs. So it stayed in the lab. Today, that changes. AtlasBase is proud to announce Thalia — a DNA synthesis chip that produces in a single day what the entire synthetic DNA industry previously manufactured in a full year. A 700x jump in throughput, built on 5.6 billion electro-chemical synthesis sites. It's the barrier that's held this technology back for 30+ years, and it's the first time anyone's crossed it at a scale that matters for enterprise IT. Here's the bigger deal: this isn't just a storage breakthrough. For the first time, data can be stored and computed on in the same molecular medium. No moving data between storage and processors. No translation layer. The compute happens where the data lives. That's what makes it a platform, not a product. We're also clear about what this isn't. It's not replacing silicon. It's a new tier designed to complement the infrastructure enterprises already run — built for the data-density and power constraints the data center is facing today, and that AI is making worse by the day. This is the result of work by a team that has been advancing commercial DNA synthesis for more than 15 years. AtlasBase is opening Early Access Programs with select partners and customers across media, financial services, logistics, manufacturing, and scientific research. Initial applications include digital preservation, enterprise archives, and complex optimization challenges. Chris Law liked thisChris Law liked thisScientists had long considered whether DNA molecules could be used for computation, but the field took a major step forward in 1994 when Leonard Adleman demonstrated that DNA could be used to solve a computational problem. Subsequent breakthroughs established that logic gates, switches, memory elements, and increasingly sophisticated circuits could be constructed using DNA and other biological molecules. For much of its history, molecular computing has remained a mix of theoretical and experimental work in the lab. More recently, scientists working with the private sector have successfully demonstrated practical applications, particularly in data storage. Molecular-based technologies are now beginning to enter the commercial arena and could become a compelling consideration in future solution architectures. This week I wrote about molecular computing and storage for my column in Forbes: https://lnkd.in/g44Bf-EG

Chris Law liked thisChris Law liked thisWhat a Connect we had yesterday! Connect has always been a highlight of my time in Wearables. Two years ago, we showed the Orion AR glasses prototype. Last year, we unveiled Meta Ray-Ban Display. And this year, our teams cooked again: Muse integrations, new glasses styles, and several major improvements across Wearables. Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses are our first audio-only AI glasses, with lighter styles and longer battery life. RBM Gen 3 adds an Aviator style, which as a pilot, I’ve been wanting for a long time. We also introduced more Meta Glasses styles and collaborations with Kylie Jenner and Lisa! But the highlight for me was showing off Muse on glasses, along with the tiny Muse Charm that lets you bring your personal assistant wherever you go. My Muse is named Snoopy and yes he wears an astronaut suit. 🤓 We also announced that Meta Ray-Ban Display is going international, plus cycling and transit directions, better Web App discovery through a new Explore surface, and holograms for video calls. I spent a long time working on holograms with the team, so seeing them announced was especially meaningful. I’m super proud of the people behind all of this and the care, creativity, and technical talent they bring every day. Building is our love language. ❤️

Chris Law liked thisChris Law liked thisI have tinnitus. Today is the first time I'm talking about it publicly. At times the ringing in my ear is so loud that I struggle to hear certain words and frequencies. If you've been in meetings with me, you might have noticed me speaking louder or requesting others to repeat what they said. My dad experienced hearing loss a few years ago, so have some cousins. So it seems to run in the family. I remember getting my dad a pair of hearing aids last year. We made multiple trips to the audiologist to tune it and it was pretty inconvenient for him. The hearing aids are clunky and ugly. It is never going to get better, in fact it will get worse over time. It was expensive and given a choice my dad will not wear it in public. He does not want to be perceived as having hearing loss. This is the reality of millions of people who suffer from mild to moderate hearing loss. But yesterday at Connect we announced something that will change all of this; we announced Hearing Enhancement. Hearing Enhancement turns your Meta Glasses into a Hearing Aid Ty to the incredibly talented group of researchers & builders who let me join them on the journey to bring this product to market . Hearing enhancement is an FDA-cleared software feature that helps adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss hear better, coming to supported AI glasses. Hearing enhancement can be set up at home in minutes — no clinic or prescription needed. Launching in the US later this year, hearing enhancement will be available to add to supported AI glasses for $149.99 (HSA/FSA eligible*) or with a Meta One subscription.

Voice is a super interesting modality right now - maybe the first modality we're seeing move to open source models across a number of scale ups / enterprises. Reliability concerns, high costs, and open source model performance are pushing engineers to do their own fine tuning vs. relying on third-party vendors of proprietary models. Many of these orgs have already been collecting their own first-party data and now with third-party vendors like Extrian, David AI, etc they can train really high quality models. RL has been insanely hyped, but it's been unclear how long it will take scale ups and enterprises to actually lean in. Voice AI might be hitting that inflection point faster than expected.

I'm syndicating Technically Speaking to Substack alongside the Heavy Chain blog (heavychain.org/blog). The content stays the same: practical, unvarnished notes on agent systems, tooling, and whatever architecture we're stress-testing at Heavy Chain. No synthetic hype, just real operational data. Recent pieces covered our multi-agent CLI council in Herdr and a real-repo audit of DaisyUI. On Monday, I'm publishing Part 1 of a four-part teardown on TypeSafe's Jev model and System 1 decision logic in production code. If you prefer getting these directly in your inbox rather than relying on the feed algorithm to surface them, you can subscribe here: https://lnkd.in/gZC-yWRR

Greylock is leading the seed in SuperMe, the AI-native professional network. Most expertise is not yet legible to LLMs. Professionals demonstrate expertise in private contexts: product docs, meeting notes, and most often - in their own heads. SuperMe is building a way to extract and structure these insights into AI profiles, grounded in an expert's real words and personality. And it is network-first; the more conversations one's AI profile has, the more opportunities for experts to reinforce or create new insights -- expertise compounds. This is one of the strongest examples of founder-market fit we've seen at Greylock. Casey Winters is the most in-demand product & growth advisor that marketplace operators (self included) wish they could hire. And Ludo Antonov built & led engineering teams at some of the most iconic network businesses over the past decade: Whatnot, Lyft, and Pinterest (where he worked closely with Casey). The two started this company out of our offices, and have until now been quietly building a highly curated network with profiles like Elena, Lenny, Brian, etc. We see a unique opportunity to create the professional network graph in a world where likes & follower counts have lost meaning.
