Amir Salehi, Ph.D. reacted on thisAmir Salehi, Ph.D. reacted on thisWhat Fervo’s IPO says about Houston’s future (opinion) The Stanford geothermal spinout is "built on Houston know-how, talent and technology — but it got its start in the Bay Area, where founders are encouraged to take the risky plunge," writes Taylor Chapman, principal New Climate Ventures (NCV) and investor in Fervo Energy. The successful IPO is a signal of what Houston could become. Fervo uses oil and gas drilling technology to produce zero-carbon geothermal power at commercial scale. It's a perfect fit for Houston: built on the city's engineering talent, supply chains, and industrial expertise, yet pointing toward a cleaner energy future. The timing matters. Houston's oil and gas sector has shed over 100,000 jobs in the past decade, and the city has historically lagged behind peers in producing high-growth, venture-backed companies. Fervo shows a different path forward — one that leans into Houston's manufacturing strength and deep technical talent rather than chasing Silicon Valley's software playbook. Houston already leads the U.S. in cleantech job growth. The ingredients are there. Now, as Chapman says, the city needs bold leadership, a stronger startup ecosystem, and the confidence to own its role in the energy transition. In a collaborative effort between Phoenix Global Resources, H&P and Corva, we announced the integration enabling Corva’s Predictive Drilling solution to operate in conjunction with H&P’s Autodriller platform on Rig 234, currently under contract to PGR. At a high level, the integration connects predictive analytics with H&P’s automated drilling control system to support drilling operations through enhanced data visibility and operational insight. This limited-scope deployment represents the first time this integration has been enabled on an H&P rig; a strong example of what’s possible when teams align around a shared operational goal. 👏Congratulations to the PGR team and thank you for your partnership and leadership. We’re proud to support what you’re building and look forward to what we can achieve together next.

After earning a master's degree in materials science and engineering at Stanford, Pichai went on to help build and lead products used by billions around the world, including Google Chrome. He will address graduates and their guests at Stanford Stadium on June 14. The ceremony will be Pichai’s first in-person commencement speech. “Sundar is a deeply thoughtful leader who has a vivid sense for how technology can improve society and transform individual lives. He epitomizes what it means for a Stanford graduate to have a broad impact,” said Stanford President Jon Levin. “I'm excited to hear his reflections and advice to our graduates as they take the next step into their own futures.”

Amir Salehi, Ph.D. reacted on thisWrapping up Day 2 at CERAWeek and here’s the uncomfortable truth: AI isn’t limited by models anymore. It’s limited by energy, infrastructure and execution speed. That shift is redefining the entire industry in real time. The winners in this next era won’t be the ones with the best AI. They’ll be the ones who turn AI into real-time action at scale. A few signals that are hard to ignore: 1) We’ve moved beyond “energy transition” → into “energy expansion”. AI is driving a surge in demand that changes the equation entirely. This isn’t about optimizing what exists—it’s about building what’s missing. The real question: who owns the infrastructure and the intelligence layer? 2) AI is becoming the operating system of energy. Not dashboards. Not pilots. Real-time, closed-loop systems where data, physics, and AI continuously drive decisions—from the field to the grid. And the proof is everywhere: measurable gains across CAPEX and OPEX. The debate is over. 3) Speed is the new moat. Everyone has access to models. Very few can execute in real time. Permitting, compute, deployment—these are now the chokepoints. The leaders will be defined by how fast they move from insight → decision → action. 4) Tech companies are becoming energy players. Energy companies are becoming software companies. Capital is chasing both.

Good morning Crack Managers, Last time, we looked at some data from Yan et al (IPC 2018). This SCC data demonstrated the difference in model validation statistics for different toughness assumptions, and this relates to the crack tip stress state conditions. Today we'll do the same with some data from Anderson (PRCI 2017). He performed similar validation work for several crack models, not using SCC data, but rather the exemplar Battelle surface crack data (ASTM 1973). Anderson reports a bit differently than other researchers, he reports the INVERSE of the typical failure pressure ratio. This means below one is conservative and above one is non-conservative. Anderson looked specifically at CorLAS, and used two toughness values. Battelle (Hahn / plane stress ): 1.171 (moderately NON-conservative) Wallin (plane strain) : 0.988 (near perfect, slight conservatism) So, the difference here is 0.183, a little less difference than the SCC data we saw earlier. This is because the error in toughness and the error in disregarding colony geometry and stress intensity factors compounds itself. That's also something to think about. Again, I don't want to misrepresent anyone's work. Anderson did not discuss these differences in terms of plane stress or plane strain conditions. That is my personal observation. Anderson did, however, recognize the Battelle / Hahn toughness was much higher than Wallin, and that this would mask errors associated with inappropriate use of length in the log-secant surface crack model. He also modified Wallin with an additional constraint factor, which is consistent with use of plane strain conditions for surface cracks, as he discusses in his excellent textbook.
