Jennifer Dulski shared thisIt was so fun bumping into Larry Nelson on my visit to LinkedIn last week! Though perhaps not as big a coincidence as it seemed. In fact, Larry saw me come in because every day he sits at a desk in the lobby near the front door, even though he has a desk upstairs. I love this. Sitting in the lobby gives Larry the opportunity to see everybody as they come in, whether that might be: - people on his team - cross-functional colleagues he works with - execs that he wants to grab for a minute on an idea - partners he's working with - old friends who may be there for other reasons (like me, visiting the great Jessica Jensen). When I worked in the community space, we often said that the people who create the strongest communities are like great party hosts because they welcome everyone, make people feel comfortable, introduce people to each other to start conversations, and more. That's Larry. He's essentially hosting a party for all of LinkedIn and its visitors. What a great example he sets, especially for a company whose very core is about building strong networks. This is true for teams too. The best leaders are the ones that really understand the people on their team, make everyone feel welcome, and are available when people need support (effectively "waiting in the lobby"). Thanks for being such an awesome role model, Larry, and great to see you!

Jennifer Dulski shared thisHow it started...how it's going. Who would have imagined when the amazing Lisa Kay Solomon and I were college roommates that 25 years later we'd: a) both be teaching at Stanford (her in the Stanford d.school and me at Stanford University Graduate School of Business) and b) I would be a guest on her 5-star rated How We Future Podcast?! Not me. First, a few things to clarify from this college photo: :) -- those of you who ask where my daughters get their curly hair, now you know ✅ -- not clear why I'm wearing a Penn sweatshirt when we went to Cornell University 🐻 -- what kind of "pre-selfie face" am I making there?! 😜 Back to business, though. I have loved listening to Lisa's podcast since she started it. It's inspiring, hopeful, practical, and funny. Seriously. You should listen and subscribe. In our episode we cover: -- How purpose creates a thread across winding careers and why straight lines don't matter -- How teaching can make you a better learner and leader -- How sports and other hobbies can teach key leadership lessons -- How to leverage AI to become a stronger leader, while keeping what makes us human -- Plus, a bunch of fun acronyms (no surprise for anyone that knows me) for work and life Listen, watch, or read the transcript here: https://lnkd.in/gZgvWyhC Tagging a few people who may appreciate this (and the throwback photo) Lisa Bernard, Matt Rosenberg, Jennifer Koen, Ken Grouf, Deborah Op den Kamp (and feel free to tag others in the comments too.)

Jennifer Dulski shared thisI've been thinking a lot about the difference between a coach and a trainer. Coaches help us uncover wisdom we already have. Trainers help us build skills we don't have yet, and then practice them until they stick. Great leaders need both. Learn → practice → get feedback → apply → repeat. We all know what a personal trainer looks like at the gym. At Rising Team, we're building a personal trainer for your leadership muscle. Here's why:

Jennifer Dulski shared thisIf you want to be unstoppable, don't ask questions that can be answered with "no." Debbi Fields, the founder of Mrs. Fields, shared this brilliant advice at Camp FFF, the awesome Female Founders Fund event I was grateful to attend in June. Debbi started her business in 1977, when there were far fewer female entrepreneurs. As you can imagine, she encountered plenty of naysayers and obstacles. Still, she didn't let them shake her core belief in herself. She said one key to her success was learning to ask questions that can't be easily answered with a no. After her talk, I chased her down to understand exactly what she meant. She gave me a simple example: ❌ Don't ask → "Can you make time to meet?" ✅ Do ask → "When would be a good time for us to meet?" What I love about Debbi's framing is that it goes deeper than persistence. When we ask questions that assume a yes, we signal something important: I take myself seriously, and you should too. It doesn't surprise me that both of Debbi's daughters are also founders. Ashley Fields started Fields Good, a health-focused cookie company. Jen Fields McKay founded Cookie Monster Vintage, a vintage clothing brand. Debbi is rocking one of Jen's pieces in this photo. I am also a mom of two daughters. Watching Debbi speak about her girls with such pride reminded me that the most powerful thing we can model for the next generation is the belief that we belong and the persistence to prove it. This year's Camp FFF felt especially energizing to me. There was a noticeable turnout of female founders in their second or third act (like me!), building things and backing each other. Shout out to Julie Bornstein, Joanna Strober, Gwen Whiting, Gregg Renfrew, Tara Comonte, and Amanda Hesser, among others. Barriers and moments of doubt are part of every entrepreneur's journey. What makes the difference is having the self-belief to keep going and the community to remind you why you started. #Founders #Leadership #RisingTeam

Jennifer Dulski shared thisSo Jessica Jensen says I need to be posting more video. :) As much as I dislike being on video, I'm going to listen to her. This first one is a key part of the origin story of Rising Team. It's about the pain I felt trying to take the high-touch leadership support I was getting as an exec in big tech and scale it out to my larger org. Any of my ex-Yahoo folks remember this awesome training by Fred Kofman? Thank you, Fred, for inspiring me all those years ago and prompting me to think about how to build something that could serve the many leaders who aren't able to get direct access to coaches and deep training.

Jennifer Dulski shared thisHad a great discussion with Michael Lopez today on the hidden costs of under-trained leaders. We talked about what companies can do to avoid this, how today's tools finally allow leaders at all levels to invest in their own growth, and our fair share of sports : workplace metaphors.Jennifer Dulski shared thisMost companies train managers the way athletes would never train for a triathlon — by sitting in a classroom. We gather people with wildly different experience levels into the same room, teach the same frameworks at the same pace, then expect them to perform under pressure with little to no practice. For years, we've accepted this as normal because personalized leadership coaching felt unrealistic for anyone below the C-suite. In this episode of The Top Voice Podcast, Jennifer Dulski joins us to unpack the hidden costs of undertrained leaders and how AI is changing what's possible. As CEO and founder of Rising Team, Jennifer is building an AI leadership development platform that combines personalized training, roleplay coaching, and team facilitation tools. With leadership experience at Facebook, Google, Yahoo!, and Change.org, she's seen firsthand how poor leadership development creates ripple effects that show up in high-stakes conversations, underdeveloped talent, and eroded team culture. We explore why traditional leadership development fails, what the real costs are when managers lack practice and support, and how AI is making personalized leadership coaching accessible at scale. Jennifer also shares how companies can build leadership capability that actually translates to better outcomes instead of just checking a training box. If you're responsible for developing leaders, managing a team, or wondering why leadership training never seems to stick, this conversation will change how you think about what effective leadership development really requires.

Jennifer Dulski shared thisMeta is a live case study in what happens when we starve culture to feed performance. Eventually, both will suffer. I led Facebook Groups for two years, so I know firsthand the kind of talent Meta attracts—ambitious, purpose-driven people who want to build things that matter. It has been so sad to watch the company make decisions that erode morale. (See my past post on their layoffs: https://lnkd.in/gff3ybx6 .) This isn't just a Meta problem. Across tech, pressure has increased at the expense of people and culture. Meta is simply the most visible example of where this leads. Companies too often act like high expectations and a strong culture are at odds. That’s misguided. I’ve never seen a company thrive without both. I tell my Stanford GSB students that great cultures require the three P's: ✅ Purpose: We need our work to have meaning ✅ People: We need trust and connection to our colleagues ✅ Plan: We need investment in our growth and mobility Get those right, and high expectations feel like motivators, not threats or burdens. The AI era has put real pressure on companies to compete, and sacrifice is sometimes necessary. It just can’t be sustained at the expense of respect, trust, and care for each other as humans. In fact, AI should be able to help us spend less time on repetitive tasks and free up more time for investing in people. The good news is that Meta recently acknowledged the AI reorganization was poorly handled and outlined several concrete plans to improve morale. These are hopeful signs that they are finally re-prioritizing their people and culture again. I hope it’s a lesson for other companies, too. Great talent isn’t looking for an easy ride. They want work that matters, leaders they trust, and employers invested in their success. Companies that pair higher expectations with deeper investment in their people are the ones that will win, and the ones worth working for.

Jennifer Dulski shared thisJust wrapped up another quarter teaching at Stanford GSB and it reminded me of a humbling lesson in leadership I learned from one of my students. Last year, I had one student who was noticeably quiet. He sat in the back, always hunched down, and I spent most of the quarter assuming he was disengaged. In every class, I ask students to role-play difficult conversations in front of their peers, and I dreaded calling on him. But I had to. The premise of the class is that each student gets to do at least one front-of-class roleplay. I felt nervous on his behalf because I assumed he was underprepared and would feel uncomfortable performing in front of his peers. Boy was I wrong. The day it was his turn, he delivered the best feedback roleplay I had seen in five years of teaching. It was a truly wow moment. And it was a powerful "don't judge a book by its cover" reminder for me that initial impressions can be deceiving. It was also a wake-up call about how easily we can underestimate the talent sitting right in front of us. As leaders, we owe it to ourselves—and to our teams—to question our first impressions. We may be drawing conclusions based on behavior that has nothing to do with ability. Sometimes people just need the chance to show us what we've been missing. They may be far more prepared than we ever realized. ------- And thank you as always to my awesome students! One of this year's sections in the photo below. As with this lesson, I always learn just as much or more from them as I believe they do from me. #leadership #teaching

Jennifer Dulski shared thisBoy was it awesome to be in NYC last night. New York celebrated in full NYC style after an incredible Game 4 of the NBA finals. The biggest comeback in finals history and a 1-point win in the very last second. It was completely electric. To me, there were two things that made this so amazing: First, the comeback itself. No matter how bleak it may look, an inspired, hard-working, tightly connected team can make anything happen together. In fact, sometimes it's precisely when it seems the most impossible that a strong team can make biggest rallies happen. Second, the sheer magnitude of the celebration. From top to bottom of NYC, there were crowds, horns honking, people screaming with joy. It was amazing to witness. It reminded me how important it is to truly celebrate (which I've been told I'm not always great at), even the triumphs along the way when they aren't yet the final goal. As with so many sports lessons, there's something for all of us to take into our own lives and our own leadership. And though I'm not a native New Yorker, I'm in town through the weekend and will certainly be cheering on the Knicks in Game 5! #Knicks #NYKnicks #NBAFinals

Jennifer Dulski reacted on thisJennifer Dulski reacted on thisMy kindergartener has developed a strong preference for commuting to school in white go-go boots with heels. She often pairs them with a Strawberry Shortcake nightgown, or the strawberry shirt with black and pink shorts. (see below) This exasperates me for two reasons. First, go-go boots? Really, do I even have to explain this? Second, no New York woman should have to commute 12 blocks in heels. Since school began, I've argued with her every morning. Put on sneakers. You’ll be cold. Your feet will hurt. Those are not walking shoes. She wins. She always wins. She has the particular rage born of the conviction that, right or wrong, she is in charge of her own life. I identify with this rage because, SAME. But still, I'm technically in charge of guiding the circumstances of said life. So this morning, when I saw the go-go boots, I suggested socks. ("NO!") And then I said: “GOOD CHOICE." Then I mentioned that we’d be walking the 12 blocks to school instead of taking the B38 like we normally do. Cool! I tucked her sneakers into her backpack. About four blocks in, she looked up at me. “Did you bring my sneakers?” I had. The go-go boots are currently sitting on my desk. When my manager, Courtney Chapman Coupe, passed by, I felt the need to explain this saga. She laughed and said this is actually a pretty smart management strategy. In a phrase: "You’ll figure it out." Give people enough room to experience the consequences of their own choices. Stay close enough to help when they ask. It really does seem to get better results. (And to the person who saw fit to give my daughter go-go boots, you know who you are, thanks.)

Jennifer Dulski reacted on thisJennifer Dulski reacted on thisOver 15 years ago, Laura Jones was one of my hosts at GSB Admit Weekend. Last night I got to interview her in front of a room full of GSB students. Laura and I became close friends after the GSB. We were both pregnant with our first kids when I was a CEO and she was the first product marketing hire at Uber, and we've built careers and families side by side ever since. Last night was our first time sharing a professional stage. When work and friendship overlap like that, it's one of the best parts of this job. Laura, now CMO of Instacart, made a point that stuck with me: when anyone can vibe code an app in a day, go-to-market matters more than ever. Building is getting easier. Getting people to care is still the hard part. John D China of J.P. Morgan opened the night with lessons from four tech cycles on the power of your network. It was our kickoff event of the year for GSB students, and the first time we introduced the new Salt VC brand on campus. What a way to start the school year. Thank you to our co-sponsors, J.P. Morgan and Orrick, and especially to Erin Lashbrook, James Abishek Wilson, Lewis Hower and Neel Lilani for partnering with us. Thank you to my partners Ben Capell and Taylor Jones and the whole Salt team, and a special shout-out to Jonathan Ni, our MBA2 fellow who led the event, Blake Barney and our rockstar venture fellows Erik Ryde, Pranav Avasarala, Cierra Madore, Audrey DeGuerrera, who helped made it happen. ✨ MBA1s, if you are interested in being a Salt VC venture fellow, reach out to Erik and Cierra about the opportunity!

Jennifer Dulski reacted on thisJennifer Dulski reacted on thisAn FDA advisory committee reviews GRAIL's Galleri Test multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test this Wednesday. The WSJ editorial board laid out the record this weekend. Lines worth reading: "Galleri caught four times as many cancers in total than the U.K.'s four recommended screenings for colon, breast, lung and cervical cancer." "More than half of cancers detected were at early stages, and 73% don't have recommended screenings." GRAIL's mission to 'detect cancer early, when it can be cured' approaches a big milestone that will drive down cost, make it accessible for many more, and save many lives. Let's hope the FDA supports letting patients and doctors choose. #DetectCancerEarly #MCED https://lnkd.in/dn-TyYtH

Boards are supposed to help founders. Over the past 19 years, I've watched many trap them instead. As companies scale, many boards turn from insight to oversight and stop doing what founders actually need: Help making big, hard decisions. Early boards tend to be small, the board members are close to the business and highly invested in it. They argue from first principles. They help founders think. Later-stage boards often look more impressive on paper - they have more independent directors, committees and process. Somewhere along the way, collective problem solving gets replaced with oversight. The board shifts from helping the CEO make better decisions to monitoring decisions that have already been made. Strategy discussions get safer, real debate gets rarer and meetings become more about risk management than judgment. This usually coincides with the introduction of more professional board members. For better or worse, they often optimize for governance, optics, and liability management. That’s their job. But it’s not always what the company needs in moments of real uncertainty. Then, CEOs stop using them as thought partners. That’s a problem. So what should founders do? A few principles that help: • Keep the board as small as you can for as long as you can • Add directors for new insight they bring, not what boxes they check • Treat board seats like senior hires, not trophies • Design meetings for debate rather than reporting • Be explicit about when you want input vs approval Good boards should improve decision-making. If your board isn’t making you think harder, it’s probably not doing its job.
