Jia Ning liked thisJia Ning liked thisPower, Cooling, or Architecture: which matters most? Someone asked me that this summer, and I gave a cheeky, relativistic answer. If you don't have a datacenter, it's Power. If you have a building with power, it's Cooling. And if you work for a silicon vendor, it's Architecture. What truly matters is delivering throughput. That takes optimization across the full stack, not siloed decisions that improve one owners metrics. - Power: Deliver the most watts to the workload while being a good utility customer. High-voltage DC, solid-state transformers, and point-of-load battery storage are about to reshape the physical architecture of the datacenter. - Cooling: Moving everything to high-temperature liquid delivers the best efficiency, which means more watts available for compute. Architecture: This makes or breaks the bank. We all want the most tokens per watt, but we also need the best cost per token. Balancing throughput and cost against raw performance is hard. - Software: New algorithms are built and tuned for maximum utilization. What good is the best GPUs-per-megawatt number if your software only reaches 20% utilization? At our stealth startup, we co-develop Power, Cooling, Architecture, and Software to deliver the best results across the full stack. On that note, I'm honored to share that I've been named Vice President of Hardware Engineering, leading an amazing team of engineers who carry the torch for full-stack optimization every day. I'm excited for what we'll build together.

Jia Ning reacted on thisJia Ning reacted on thisI'm excited to share that I've joined Fractile as SVP, Systems Engineering. After spending time with several excellent companies over the past few months, I became convinced that Fractile’s inference solution will reset performance/TCO for high volume inference workloads— at the heart of delivering value for Foundation Labs and Hyperscalers. Beyond the technology and the business opportunity, I was struck by the breadth and depth of the Fractile team: people who can partner as equals with Foundation Labs and Hyperscalers on long-term roadmaps. I am joining a team that has already accomplished a great deal in a short time. I will focus on speeding delivery of Fractile’s rack-scale solutions and on building the industry and technology partnerships we need to win in AI infrastructure. Our Bay Area site is on the Playground Global campus in Palo Alto, where we will be ramping up our hiring to staff Fractile’s build-out in the Bay area. I’m glad to be back at it with a great team and a motivating mission!

Jia Ning liked thisJia Ning liked thisHeading to SC this year? So is Meta — in force. A bunch of us from Meta will be at SC26, and we'd love to meet you — I'll personally be there throughout the week. Whether you're interested in working with us, an old friend we haven't seen in a while, or someone we'd love to meet for the first time, feel free to reach out and come say hi. We're especially keen to meet students and junior researchers interested in opportunities at Meta — internships and full-time roles alike. And we want to talk with researchers and developers who'd like to collaborate with us. If you'd like to meet up, shoot me a DM (Muse is monitoring my messages to help me deal with the volume). Meta is participating across the week — a full-day tutorial (https://lnkd.in/g4d-pjGk) (Monday), a paper (https://lnkd.in/giXBqP4U) (Tuesday), a panel (https://lnkd.in/ghzJiJ4e) (Tuesday), a BoF (https://lnkd.in/gK9fGBqa) on communication libraries in HPC and AI (Wednesday), and the Career Fair (Wednesday) — and plenty more. Full details at sc26.supercomputing.org. And to kick off SC week, Monday, Nov 16, we're running a free workshop right in Chicago too: the AI Infrastructure Forum. It's not an SC event — it's ours, open to anyone, and registration is free. The lineup includes several high-profile speakers, headlined by a keynote from Kaushik Veeraraghavan, one of the most senior technical leaders at Meta. Also speaking are Jeff Hammond from Nvidia, Dean Hildebrand from Google, Mikel Jimenez from Meta, and a number of other industry leading experts. Come for the talks, stay for the people — and yes, there will be good food. Details and registration at https://lnkd.in/gsgjUfzw. Join us — let's share knowledge and insights. Looking forward to meeting you there! #metaloveshpc

Jia Ning liked thisJia Ning liked thisAfter nearly 16 years, my last day at Meta was at the start of September. What started as an experiment to pivot from data engineering to marketing analytics helped me discover my passion for building products and helping people grow. It was a privilege to grow and lead amazing teams, ship products worldwide, and solve meaningful problems across advertising, consumer, and integrity and risk. Across every team and project, I am proud that I have always been people-centric in how I show up: helping people clarify their own north star, giving honest feedback, and believing in people even before they believed in themselves. Community and connection have also been at the heart of what matters to me. Some of the "extracurriculars" closest to my heart: I scaled peer coaching circles for PMs across Meta, launched a monthly expectant parents luncheon after my first child was born in 2015, and founded Moms in Tech in 2017 — now a community of over 18k members. I am filled with gratitude that these initiatives have touched so many people and are still going strong today as others carried on the torch. And miraculously, somehow during this very busy season of life my husband and I built a full life with three wonderful kids (currently 11, 8, and 6). It wasn't easy to juggle all of it, and it made me a better leader and a better human. My next chapter: more time with my family, and exploring building a coaching practice of my own. I had already been training as a coach for several years and been integrating coaching into my director role. To everyone at Meta who partnered with me, championed me, and grew alongside me — thank you. Looking forward to seeing what more space and flexibility make possible, and I hope we cross paths again in the not-so-distant future~

Jia Ning liked thisJia Ning liked this“Our goal is to make sure the ASIC can live to its fullest potential,” says Hardware Engineer Pavan. Before each new generation of Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) goes live, engineers across silicon, hardware, software, manufacturing, and infrastructure work together to build, test, and refine the complete system around it. Pavan and Hardware Systems Engineer Samu. share what that collaboration looks like — from first silicon bring-up to deployment at data center scale and how learnings from each deployment inform the next generation of MTIA. If you’re energized by cross-functional engineering challenges at the intersection of hardware and AI, this story is for you. https://go.meta.me/4ycYoqC #LifeAtMeta #MTIA #ASIC #INFRA #AIInside the Engineering Journey From First Silicon to Data Center ScaleInside the Engineering Journey From First Silicon to Data Center ScaleMeta

Lesson-learned #1: You may turn down a $500 million investment offer but hard to say no to a $12.9 billion acquisition offer. Lesson-learned #2: Until the contract is not signed and validated by both parties and regulation authorities, the contract is not signed and validated by both parties and regulation authorities.

Coding was never the ultimate goal, it was always just the vehicle to solve a problem. Now that AI has drastically lowered the friction of syntax and code generation, the real skill boundary has shifted: 🔹 Problem Identification: Knowing what actually needs fixing. 🔹 Solution Architecture: Knowing how to frame the resolution. AI can write the code, but it cannot ask the right questions. As execution becomes commoditized, companies in the AI era will naturally prefer problem-diagnosticians over pure syntax-writers. 💡
