Song Lu posted thisLast week, I went to my new employer to start a new job. Looking back at the past several months, the job search was quite a journey. I applied to 95 positions, went through more interviews than I can count, and eventually received a few offers. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities, the people who referred me, the recruiters and hiring managers who took the time to talk with me, and especially all the friends and former colleagues who encouraged me along the way. One thing I learned is that a job search is a very strange process. You can do everything right and still hear "no" many times. The number of rejection numbs you. And sometimes, the opportunity you really want simply doesn't work out because of timing, headcount, or circumstances completely outside your control. It is never my intention to share this just to celebrate a number, but to share a little encouragement with everyone who is still looking. I know many of my former colleagues and friends are still going through this process, and I know how difficult and exhausting it can be. Keep going. Keep learning. Keep reaching out to people. And don't let a rejection convince you that you are not good enough. Sometimes it really is just a matter of timing. I am rooting for you, all of you. I'm very fortunate that my journey has reached a good stopping point for now. For those still searching: hang in there. Your next opportunity may be closer than you think.

Song Lu reposted thisSong Lu reposted thisI worked remotely full-time for LinkedIn from 2013 until I was laid off a couple weeks ago. In that time I was promoted twice and continually received positive annual reviews. The reason I’m only considering remote roles right now is not because I’m opposed to moving, far from it. In fact I have plans to move in the semi-near future and have not yet decided where. The issue is that I have a LOT to unwind before I can even think about moving, some of which includes downsizing, dealing with some personal obligations, and selling a house. I’d gather that a lot of the more senior candidates also have similar problems. So recruiters, if you want experience and you want it fast, you need to be open to remote work for at least some amount of time. If you are not you are missing out on some of the most talented candidates. If you are hiring for roles that are open to fully remote work, feel free to reach out! 14 years at LinkedIn didn’t count for nothing and the severance package gives me the time I need to seek out a role at a company with the culture and mission that I know I will thrive in. But I can’t apply for these jobs if I don’t know about them! I am not yet in the submitting cold applications stage of being unemployed, so now’s your chance to get first crack at me, recruiters. I’d love to hear from you.

Song Lu shared thisMine was Fortran-77. Decades ago, I had the privilege and pleasure of re-writing a piece of Fortran simulation code into C. However, I still vividly remember all the headache of untangling the goto's. Had I not been so obsessed with removing every single goto statement, the translation would have taken much less time, possibly a couple of order of magnitude. Code hygiene is not free. Song Lu liked thisSong Lu liked thisI’m hiring Staff Software Engineer to join Ray Core team at Anyscale! Ray Core is the foundation of the Ray ecosystem, powering libraries like Ray Train, Ray Data, and Ray Serve. With Ray used by companies like Nvidia, Uber, Spotify, and many others, the systems we build support AI workloads across the industry. If challenges like these excite you: → Designing the primitives behind distributed execution and scheduling → Improving resource utilization and performance across large clusters → Building fault tolerance for demanding AI workloads → Solving difficult concurrency, networking, and runtime performance problems …I’d love to connect. As a Staff Engineer, you’ll own a major technical area of Ray Core: identify the problems that matter, shape the roadmap and architecture, and lead projects across engineers and teams—all while staying hands-on with implementation and production debugging. What makes this opportunity exciting to me is the combination of technical depth, ownership, and open-source impact. Your work can help shape how developers across the AI ecosystem build and scale their applications. If your background is in databases, storage, streaming systems, schedulers, or distributed runtimes, this could be a great next challenge. Learn more and apply (https://lnkd.in/guYcU_CZ), or message me directly. Referrals are very welcome!
