Mike Nelson, MBA shared thisOkay. So in 2014, Really Good Emails started out as a blog (that was cool back then). Then came RGE 2.0 about 6 years later, with a custom-built platform to help millions of email makers find inspiration more easily. It worked well enough that Beefree acquired us and we started working on the next weird chapter, where we did things like dress up in greenscreen bodysuits, theme our Unspam conference after a cult, and tried to make candles to help with your email sending anxiety. But there was more going on in the background. Oh, so much more. Today, RGE is more than just collecting great emails. Today, RGE is helping people make them. Today... 🥁 🥁 🥁 (←Drumroll for dramatic pause) we announced RGE Studio. If you used the Beefree site to build emails, then RGE Studio will feel familiar. That's because Beefree is now RGE Studio, but with more bells and whistles and tied into the entire creative environment of RGE. I could talk about all the cool new things, like AI co-pilot, shortening the inspiration-to-creation gap, Smart Check, deterministic models, profiles... but I won't. Let's just say that it's pretty awesome, and there's much more to come. To compare where we started to where we are today is pretty cool. Couldn't have gotten this far without my other co-founders, Matthew, Matthew, and Matt, for building the RGE brand and data layer. Or to the entire Beefree team, who have worked on this thing for so long. Of course, thanks to our community of email makers who have trusted us for so long and nagged us forever to add this creativity part to RGE. Of course I wrote about the evolution of RGE in a blog article to go full circle, but this video sums it up pretty well.

Well, at least it is in this one case I wanted to share: Forward Studios is an agency focused on B2B distributors. Now, it certainly would’ve been easy enough for them to say, “We are an email agency for B2B distributors” as their homepage headline, because that would’ve been (radically) clear. But instead they created a homepage that resembles an email inbox, as I've shown below (or go to their homepage at https://lnkd.in/dpT-VrzK. That homepage email inbox is clickable! The different email messages reinforce their key value props. And instead of a nav bar at the top they made the different email folders on the left the nav, and when you click on them, the “emails” in the inbox are telling a story about what they do. Instead of “contact us” you can send them an email through the email tool they built on the website. Seriously - go play with it. How brilliant is that? Also, I’ve met the founder, Kyler Nixon, who is - in addition to being a genuinely nice human being - someone who cares deeply about email marketing. So when you go to his company’s website, it’s pretty clear that they care deeply about email marketing. They almost don’t even need the normal blah blah blah where they have to convince you that they have clients and care about email. If you really cared about email, you’d build a website that looks like an email inbox. As I once mentioned in the Gobbledy Newsletter, if you ever find yourself in a pickle where you need to sound like a smart person, you should say, apropos of nothing, “Well, as Marshall McLuhan said, ‘The medium is the message.’” I would suggest that after you say that you keep speaking and pray to God that nobody asks you any follow ups, because let’s be honest - neither of us knows who Marshall McLuhan is, and we’re not exactly sure what that quote means, but we’re pretty certain Ezra Klein said it once or twice so obviously it sounds smart. Anyway, NOW I know what means! The medium here is, in fact, the message. And the message is, “we love email so much that email is the best way for us to tell you that.” Or kinda something like that. Kyle’s company is, I’m pretty sure, a team of maybe 2 people, and they were able to come up with something that brilliant. I’m sure your team of, uh, more than 2 can also spend some time brainstorming how your website medium could be your message. Let me know how that goes.

Last night, my wife and I volunteered to provide nearly 1,000 mocktail drinks for a special prom in Nashville, bringing in high school kids from surrounding states. Our cost: barely over $500. The last caterer bid I received for a similar sized event (Unspam) was $3,200 + tax without alcohol. We didn’t skimp on ingredients, either. Name brand sodas and water, quality popping boba, top-shelf syrups, pebble ice from Sonic… It would’ve been even cheaper if we were buying this in bulk or got membership restaurant prices. Plus we still had tons left when we finished. “but what about the labor? or prep/delivery?” We used our van and spent a total of 5 hours. My wife spent maybe an hour more researching, buying stuff on Amazon, and comparing prices between our local grocery stores. Even if we charged $100/hr, it still would’ve been waaaay cheaper than other events I have paid for. The whole mocktail charge that is similar to a cocktail price is a joke. I now see why Swig is doing so well. Maybe I should do it for Unspam in the future? Mike Nelson, MBA shared thisMy dad worked from home in the 1990s. We had our own dedicated internet phone line, which I sometimes interrupted by trying to call into MTV's Total Request Live. I spent hours on his computer, building skins for WinAmp and downloading songs and computer games from Napster. So when my team told me that they had successfully connected to a computer in 1998, it brought back some rich memories. Not a computer set up to look like 1998. An actual computer in 1998. At first I assumed this was a metaphor, but then I saw the Blackberry. Today we made Timewarp publicly available. It involves retroactive packet compression, WAP-adjacent formatting, and what our engineers are calling “deeply irresponsible temporal routing.” I’m proud of the team and I’m also concerned about the space-time continuum. But mostly I’m excited that we finally answered the question no one was asking: Would your email survive 1998? Here's some more information on how we did it.

Mike Nelson, MBA shared thisQuick rant: Email is that annoying little intersection of strategy, psychology, design, systems, copy, timing, and organization chaos. I've been doing it for nearly 20 years, and somehow the last year has pushed the industry into doing it faster, personalizing more, and utilizing AI in a way that makes us look smart and not lazy. But I see a bunch of companies and AI "leaders" out there talking about email's simplicity. "Just tell the AI that you want an abandoned cart email, and `Poof` there you go." Cool. What about context, taste, judgement calls, brand, positioning? What about knowing when to break the rules? Where's the inside joke about shipping my pants? I met Kasey Luck in 2024 and one thing I've appreciated is that she actually thinks clearly about how AI should support the work, not replace the parts that require a brain and a pulse. So when she applied to speak at Unspam on the topic, I knew that she wouldn't sell AI snake-oil magic. She'd come with tactics to tackle the repetitive, tedious work that curses productivity while keeping the human in the loop to make the biggest impact. That's what Unspam is for: All of us in that messy intersection, with real ideas, real understanding, and real problems we're trying to solve... with the right tools that help us become better humans who enjoy our creative jobs. Mike Nelson, MBA liked thisMike Nelson, MBA liked thisIn my last post, I mentioned that getting my call follow up agent to include links that didn't 404 was more of a rabbit hole than I expected. Here's where that rabbit hole went. My first instinct was to have the agent run a Google search and dynamically pull in relevant links. It was a disaster. Hallucinated URLs, broken links, pages that existed but had nothing to do with what was in the call. For a technical audience like Beefree SDKs, an email with bad links hurts the agent's credibility with reps and is certainly a speed bump on the road to trust and adoption. We'd recently moved our documentation to GitHub, and on our previous platform, a native MCP wasn't available. I was a bit stuck. Was I going to need to create a deposit of documentation links and constantly keep it updated? That sounded rough and not scalable. So I went to the source and reached out to our Technical Writer (Thanks, Zair Rogelio Kelley Ortiz!) on Slack. We grabbed a meeting, I showed him what I was building and how the agent worked, and he immediately knew what was missing. He suggested the GitHub MCP as the solution; he was already familiar with it, and suddenly the agent had a direct, reliable connection to our documentation. What that unlocked was bigger than just fixing broken links. The agent can now pull deep links to the exact part of our docs based on what came up in the call. Not high-level overviews of features. Links designed to help, connecting a prospect's specific question directly to the technical answer they need. That's when I realized why building this ourselves was actually worth it. Writing a follow-up email after a sales call isn't a new problem. Plenty of tools we already used could read a transcript and draft something decent. But none of them could connect to our documentation. That combination of the persona, the docs, and the deep links is what made this worth building and deploying. An agent that didn't just produce AI slop but content that was truly useful for our customer team. It also ended up saving between 30-45 minutes per email. Time used to be spent digging through documentation and manually hyperlinking into follow-ups. One unexpected bonus: the whole process shone a light on the quality of work already being done on our documentation. Something that became even more visible once we built a workflow that depended on it. More to come. #n8n #AIagents

It’s that they spent 10+ years building taste, a curated sense of what good email actually looks like across hundreds of thousands of pros. In a recent recap from #FIPPCongress2025, Joe shared how Hearst is leveraging first-party data—not just to deliver value, but to optimize their sites so the user experience truly matches the content. It’s about taking a holistic view across all platforms to ensure you’re giving customers the best possible experience: delivering the right content seamlessly, at the right time, without friction: "Engagement also depends on experience. “We can produce some of the best content available,” Joe said, “but if we have a bad experience, people are not going to stick around.” Hearst’s teams have therefore prioritised technical excellence – page-load speed, metadata, and canonical structures that avoid competing URLs. “We’ve actually created SEO checklists and a playbook for best practices that we’re rolling out to our international offices and our network of licensees,” he said. “Despite the talk of declines, we’re actually up year-on-year in traffic across our international brands.”"

💩 I'm calling BS on Google's latest Q2 Search Revenue announcement. Google just announced impressive Q2 revenue growth for search (10% YOY). They also mentioned in their report that AI-powered search (AI overviews, AI mode) now has 2b monthly users. So the natural conclusion would be - "Google is delivering more search products and thus more traffic/clicks - which is resulting in more revenue" But not so fast. Various industry benchmarks and studies are showing that click volume from search is actually steady, or showing only modest growth at around 2%. So what explains the 10% growth in Search? Easy - auction manipulation. The same studies that show the 2% growth in clicks also show a 7-9% growth in CPC. As Google pushes more advertisers to automated machine-based bidding, we are now in a situation where a bunch of AI-based bidding algorithms are bidding against each other, driving up CPCs. This, of course, is not sustainable. Which is why Google is moving fast to push its advertisers away from search-only and into mid to upper funnel campaigns like P-Max and Demand Gen. So don't believe the hype. Google isn't getting more customers, or even generating more clicks for its existing customers. It's just charging the same set of customers more.

There are countless articles about agency pricing models - hourly vs. value-based, retainers vs. project fees, performance comp, hybrids. It’s become a near-obsession in our industry. But, trust me: if your pricing “doesn’t work,” it’s almost never the model. It’s the value. Hard stop. You can charge hourly and win. You can charge value-based and win. You can package outcomes and win. We prefer value pricing at Brandish, b/c we try to anchor our work to outcomes, but the model itself isn’t the differentiator. The delivery is. Clients only dissect pricing when they’re unsure about the value they’re receiving. Of course they do, that's the same way we all are in our own lives. When something feels marginal, we scrutinize the cost. We compare. We negotiate. We question. But when something is genuinely valuable, when it clearly drives results or meaning, we rarely analyze the price in the same way. We contextualize it. We move forward. We're good. Instead of obsessing over your pricing structure, ask the harder question: are we actually creating meaningful value for the client? Not activity. Not output. Not a bunch of PDF's. Real value. So many agencies lead with their pricing philosophy or spend disproportionate energy refining packaging and rate cards. Meanwhile, if we’re being candid, a meaningful percentage of their clients probably wouldn’t re-sign if given a clean slate. Here’s the thought exercise I like to come back to: if every single client you have today was given the choice - knowing everything they know now - would they without hesitation, choose to work with you again? If the answer isn’t a confident yes, the issue likely isn’t your pricing model. It’s your value creation. #itsaboutpeople (📸: testing out some diff views in the new space)

How do you measure the cost of lightning in a bottle? Traditional cost accounting works beautifully for most things that are manufactured based on a formula or a blueprint. But Ideas are different. You can track material costs, labor hours, machine time, and overhead with surgical precision. But creative ideas in ad agencies? That's where costing (and therefore pricing) for agency services stops working and a whole industry teeters on the edge of bankruptcy. Consider this scenario: A junior creative has a breakthrough idea on the morning drive to work that becomes a $50M campaign. Meanwhile, a senior team spends 200 billable hours on a concept that gets killed in the first client meeting. Which was more "expensive" to produce? Our accounting systems obsess over tracking every billable hour, but they completely miss: -The "eureka moments" that are the lifeblood of the creative process -The value of creative cross-pollination between unrelated projects -The accumulated experience that makes seemingly effortless work possible -The psychological safety required for risk-taking and innovation We've become masterful at measuring inputs—salary costs, software licenses, office rent—but terrible at connecting these to creative outputs. A campaign that took 50 hours might outperform one that took 500 hours. Yet our cost models treat them as inversely valuable. This creates perverse incentives. We optimize for billable hours instead of breakthrough thinking. We penalize efficiency and reward wheel-spinning. We measure creative success by how much we spent rather than what we achieved. Maybe we're asking the wrong question entirely. Instead of "What did this idea cost?" perhaps we should ask "What would not having this idea have cost our client?" The best creative work often prevents problems we'll never measure: the brand crisis that doesn't happen, the market opportunity that doesn't get missed, the emotional connection that never gets severed. Traditional cost accounting assumes we're in the business of producing predictable outputs from measurable inputs. But we're really in the business of producing valuable surprises from intangible assets. That's not a bug in our financial models—it's the fundamental nature of creative work. The sooner we acknowledge this reality, the better we can arrive at a costing structure that measures that right things and save the industry from extinction.
