Tom Hollingsworth posted thisI just wanted to say a special thanks to Sujai Hajela for making sure I got a question in today during the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Networking Investor Day Q&A. As he said, "Tom's had his hand up this whole time and I've been there before." He's a class act and I sincerely appreciate him. The next time you see someone that is trying to get in a question make sure you follow Sujai's lead and reach out to them and make it happen.

Tom Hollingsworth reposted thisTom Hollingsworth reposted thisAfter working with an fantastic group of customers and partners at Eastern Datacomm, I'm back on the market and looking for what's next. Over the past 20+ years I've built and led enterprise networks and Wi-Fi in Government, Higher Ed, Manufacturing and Warehouse, and most recently at a VAR. I've worked and consulted in environments ranging from a couple hundred network devices on a single LAN to major international networks with thousands of APs and switches and well over a hundred thousand client devices. I hold CWNE #366 and CWISE #5, along with many vendor certifications including: Cisco, HPE, and Hamina. I regularly speak at small local events and large global conferences, and I've spent the last several years teaching boot camps and deep dives on Wi-Fi Security and IoT. I design secure networks, I lead teams, and I can explain any of it to an engineer, a customer, or a VIP without losing any of them. That's what I do well. I'm looking at two kinds of roles right now: - Wireless or network architect and engineering leadership positions, or - Sales and consulting engineer roles at VARs, resellers, or partners who need someone who can speak fluently to both the technical detail and the business case. If you know of something that fits, or just want to catch up, I'd love to hear from you. DM me here or email me at jd [at] subnetwork.me

Any conference call you can take on speaker phone in a hotel lobby is not important enough for you to shush me when I'm having a conversation. Get headphones or get a room. If you are an executive that can't or won't invest in a decent set of wireless headphones I'm going to ask some hard questions about your company and your judgement. And since the content of your call has been made public I'm sure you won't mind me talking about it with everyone, right? It's not confidential if you broadcast it to the whole hotel. #NoisePollution #Entitlement #OpSec #DontMakeMeGetTheHose

By November 10, 2025, U.S. federal contractors and subcontractors in the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) handling CUI must comply with CMMC 2.0. In her latest guide, Julie Chatman MBA, CISM, a Principal with BD Emerson, shares insights into System Security Plans (SSP) as a ticket to achieving CMMC Level 2 certification or qualifying for contracts that handle CUI. Here’s what every strong SSP should include: ✅ Documented implementation of all 110 NIST 800-171 practices — with clear ownership, methods, and evidence. ✅ Policy and procedure pairing — defining both what you do and how you do it. ✅ Integrated POA&M — connecting known gaps to actionable remediation plans. ✅ Defined scope and data flows — because you can’t protect what you don’t see. ✅ Continuous improvement loop — SSPs should evolve as your systems and risks evolve. 🔗 Read Julie’s full blog post and start building your roadmap to certification and resilience with BD Emerson: https://lnkd.in/dVwGmpw6

Ignoring cloud security disclosures simply because a system is hosted offsite can leave your organization blind to critical identity risks. CVE-2026-69836 represented a maximum-severity deserialization vulnerability within Microsoft Entra ID. This flaw allowed untrusted payload data to execute arbitrary remote code, potentially bypassing access management boundaries and compromising cloud-based Active Directory topologies before Microsoft implemented backend mitigations. Partner with the team at OTS, Inc. to review your identity access controls and strengthen your overall network perimeter:

Endpoint protection identifies known and emerging threats, but application control adds another important question: should this software run at all? Allowlisting, publisher rules, and exception reviews can reduce unauthorized tools and risky executables without blocking legitimate work. It is a practical control for Central Texas businesses seeking tighter endpoints without creating unnecessary friction.

Don’t be the weakest link in your cyber defense. Phishing remains one of the top attack vectors for businesses today. In fact, recent research shows ~36% of data breaches stem from phishing attempts. In email-based attacks alone, phishing accounts for over 40% of incidents. For Texas companies, this means even one errant click or spoofed email can unlock a path straight into your systems. This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we're focused on educating teams to see through these schemes before they strike. ✅ Start by reading: “AI-Powered Phishing: How Hackers Trick Your Employees” → https://lnkd.in/gF6hnFYc

Cybercriminals rarely break in through the front door. They slip in through small issues that go unnoticed. Unpatched software, inactive accounts, weak access controls and outdated tools create openings that attackers count on. Most Austin organizations never see the threat coming until it is already inside. 🔐 If your business operates in Healthcare, Legal, Professional Services, Construction, Manufacturing or the Nonprofit sector, these blind spots put you at a higher risk. The good news is that every one of these issues can be prevented with the right Cybersecurity strategy and a team that watches your systems around the clock. Our newest article breaks down the most common security gaps and explains how CTTS helps you close them quickly and confidently. Read it here and take the first step toward stronger protection. https://lnkd.in/g245Nb2f #CTTSonline #GeorgetownTX #RoundRockTX #AustinTX #Cybersecurity #AustinBusiness #TexasTechSupport #RiskManagement #DataSecurity #CentralTexas

The oldest actively exploited vulnerability in your network is probably running on a SQL Server nobody wants to reboot. CVE-2019-1068 was patched in July 2019. Microsoft SQL Server remote code execution, CVSS 8.8, two public proof of concepts on GitHub. It is still on CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Seven years after the fix shipped. That is not a Microsoft problem. That is a patching problem, and SQL Server is where it lives. Here is why this one matters more than the score suggests. It requires authenticated database access, so it is not an internet-facing entry point. What it gives an attacker who already has a foothold is code execution in the context of the SQL Server Database Engine service account. And in most environments, that account is wildly over-privileged. Local admin. Sometimes domain credentials. Configured that way years ago because it made an install work, and never revisited. So a limited database compromise becomes server compromise, and server compromise becomes lateral movement. That is exactly why it sits on the KEV list. Why SQL Server stays unpatched. Everybody knows the reason. Patching the database means downtime, downtime means scheduling, scheduling means a conversation with the business, and the business says not this quarter. Repeat for seven years. Meanwhile SQL Server 2012 went end of life in 2022 and SQL Server 2014 in July 2024. Plenty of businesses are still running both, which means no patches are coming at all. What to actually do. Inventory every SQL Server instance you own, including the ones bundled inside line of business applications. Those are the ones nobody remembers. Check what account each instance runs as. If your database engine is running as local system or a domain admin, fix that before you fix anything else. Apply the patch on supported versions. Plan migration for anything past end of life, because no patch exists. Segment database servers. A database engine should not be able to reach your entire network. Check your own environment against the CISA KEV list. It is free, and it tells you what attackers are actually using rather than what scored highest. The uncomfortable part is that most breaches do not involve a novel exploit. They involve a known one, on a system somebody meant to patch. Networking Pulse audits patch posture and service account privilege across Greater Houston businesses, including the legacy systems that never make it onto the maintenance schedule. An ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified MSP, accredited by an IAS accredited body, Certificate #2967/NET27A. When was your oldest SQL Server instance last patched? Grab your free IT audit today: https://lnkd.in/g4FVavth #NetworkingPulse #SQLServer #PatchManagement #CyberSecurity
