I spent over $1,000 on three Nest thermostats because I believed in the product. I never saw a disclaimer that said "remote access expires when we decide to sell you something new." Recently, Google quietly disabled remote control access for older Nest devices — no refund, no meaningful notice, no opt-out. But it gets worse: the thermostats have also been hobbled so that when the temperature changes, the device now requires a manual touch on the unit before it responds. A product I paid for has been deliberately degraded to pressure me into buying a new one. I wake up in the middle of the night sweating because my thermostat — which I paid for, which worked — is waiting for me to walk downstairs and tap it like it's 2003. This is a company using its technical control over a product you already sold me to coerce an upgrade. That's planned obsolescence weaponized against loyal customers. If you're a product executive at Google Nest reading this — @Rick Osterloh, @Rishi Chandra — I'd genuinely like to know: did your team discuss what this would do to the customers who funded the early growth of this product? #Google #Nest #ConsumerRights #PlannedObsolescence #SmartHome #ProductLeadership
