One skill separates great communicators from average ones: Perspective-taking. The ability to see things from someone else’s point of view. But most people do it wrong. Here’s how to do it right, especially when you’re leading or being led: When you’re the boss, persuading down: You’re trying to convince Maria on your team to do something different. She’s pushing back. Your instinct might be to assert your authority. But that’s a mistake. Here’s why… Research shows: The more powerful you feel, the worse your perspective-taking becomes. More power = less understanding. So if you want to persuade Maria, don’t lean into your title. Do the opposite: dial your power down, just briefly. Try this: Before the next conversation, remind yourself: Maria has power too. I need her buy-in. Maybe she sees something I don’t. Lower your feelings of power to raise your perspective. From that place, ask: → What does she see that I’m missing? → What might be in her way? → What’s a win-win outcome? That shift changes the entire dynamic. Instead of steamrolling, you’re collaborating. And that’s how you earn trust and results. Now flip it. You’re the employee persuading your boss. It’s a high-stakes moment. You’re nervous. So do you appeal to emotion? No. Drop the feelings. Focus on interests. Here’s the key question: “What’s in it for them?” Not how you feel. Not your big dream. → Will it save time? → Improve performance? → Help them hit their goals? Make it about their world, not yours. Why? Because every boss has a mental shortcut: → Does this employee make my life easier or harder? Be the person who brings clarity, ideas, and upside. Not complaints, drama, or friction. In summary: → Persuading down? Dial down your power to see clearer. → Persuading up? Focus on their interests, not your emotions. Perspective-taking is a superpower, if you learn how to use it. Now practice, practice, practice.

BUT there are a lot of things in sales that will never change: 1 - Sales will ALWAYS be about solving problems and helping people. ↳ People can tell when someone is only interested in selling something. ↳ The focus should always be on the problem you solve, not the product. 2 - Listen always has been, and always will be, more important than talking. ↳ The best salespeople listen 2-3X more than they talk. ↳ They ask the right questions and give their customers time to answer. ↳ The encourage their customers to elaborate and go deeper. 3 - People buy from people they TRUST. ↳ In an AI dominated world, trust has never been more valuable. ↳ If they don't trust you, they'll find a salesperson they do trust. 4 - Never sell something to someone who doesn't NEED it. ↳ You might win a sale, but chances are it will get cancelled. ↳ There's also the risk they tell others about their bad experience. 5 - Lying is NEVER acceptable in sales. ↳ If you lie to win a sale, chances are it won't last. ↳ No good salesperson will ever need to lie to win a sale. 6 - Sales success will always be based on hard and smart work. ↳ Hard work is important, but hard smart work will always win. ↳ Quality and quantity come hand in hand in sales. 7 - Salespeople need to be RESILIENT to win at sales. ↳ You'll face a lot of rejection, objection and challenge. ↳ The best in sales walk through it and know how to deal with it. 8 - The most important sales skill is the ability to ADAPT. ↳ Adapting to new tech, new platforms, new tools and new processes. ↳ Adapting to each individual prospect and customer. I'll be the first to embrace new things in sales. But I'll always follow the basics. And after 20+ years in sales I can tell you one thing... The basics will always win. Always.

The Olympics have nailed their marketing without us realising 🥊🏅 I thought it was strange that the Olympics were starting on Friday, but I’d seen very little advertised. Anyone else? And then it hit me, whilst watching Sprint (my third newly added sports documentary on Netflix this weekend) & finding myself googling the dates of the athletes’ events at Paris, that I’d been indirectly marketed to in the most genius way. Here’s why, and more importantly, here’s why it worked: 1️⃣ Meeting the Audience Where They Are The Olympics faced a challenge: how to engage a generation that doesn’t watch mainstream TV. So, they went straight to where their audience spends time – streaming platforms. 85% of Gen Z and millennials prefer streaming over traditional TV. By launching multiple compelling sports docuseries on Netflix, they met their audience exactly where they are. 2️⃣ No Ads, Just Stories Research shows that storytelling is the most powerful tool in marketing – it's 22 times more memorable than facts alone. When you tell a story, you engage your audience’s emotions, and that connection is invaluable. It's this emotional engagement that turns viewers into fans and casual watchers into passionate supporters. No CTAs, no tracked links, just pure wonderful emotional storytelling at its finest. 3️⃣ Creating Emotional Investment These docuseries pull you into the personal lives of top athletes. You follow their journeys, their struggles, and their triumphs, right up to the competition before the Paris Olympics. This emotional investment is powerful. Suddenly you’re not only aware of these athletes in various disciplines, you’re invested in their success. 4️⃣ Building Anticipation By ending these stories on a cliffhanger, they’ve done something brilliant – they’ve made you care. You’re not just a spectator anymore; you’re invested in seeing these athletes win. And the next episode? Well that will be streamed live from Paris on mainstream TV. I know I’m not alone in wanting to see how these stories end. 5️⃣ Perfect Timing Timing is everything in marketing, and the Olympics nailed it. By launching these docuseries right before the games, they’ve ensured the stories are fresh in our minds. This makes the athletes' journeys a cultural talking point and keeps the Olympics top of mind. Strategic timing like this makes the content memorable and maximises its impact. Here’s the lesson: To truly engage your audience, focus on storytelling. Create narratives so compelling, people can’t help but follow along. Make them care about the outcome. When your audience is emotionally invested, they’re not just watching – they’re rooting for you. This weekend reminded me why I love marketing. It's not just about selling a product; it's about creating connections, inspiring emotions, and telling stories that resonate. Hire people BETTER THAN YOU and DIFFERENT TO YOU… Then LEARN FROM THEM. 🙏🏾 Sounds straightforward, doesn't it? Yet, why do so many leaders still struggle to grasp it? It’s because there's often hidden complexity beneath the surface. For example: 👀 Insecurity: Some leaders want to maintain the perception of being the smartest or most capable in the room. Therefore, surrounding themselves with highly skilled individuals could make them feel inadequate or threatened. 🔐 Need for Control: Hiring “less competent” team members could ensure that the leader remains the central figure, exerting control over important matters. 😱 Fear of Challenge: A diverse team can bring different viewpoints that might challenge the leader's ideas and decisions. 🧘🏾♂️ Comfort Zone: Some leaders prefer familiarity and ease, preventing them from being pushed out of their boundaries. ❤️ Misguided Loyalty: Leaders might adopt favouritism and hire people based on personal relationships or loyalties. 🤔 Short-Term Thinking: Hiring less skilled individuals could be a short-sighted approach to save costs or meet immediate needs, ignoring the long-term benefits of a talented and diverse team. 🤷🏾♂️ Lack of Awareness: Some leaders might just not fully recognise the value of diversity or the importance of surrounding themselves with skilled individuals. Acknowledging that you don't know everything encourages openness to fresh ideas and creative solutions. 🏋️♂️ Informed Choices: “Embrace Thought Variety" Embracing diversity of thought leads to well-rounded decisions. Different perspectives catch what others might miss, reducing blind spots. 🤝 Unified Power: “Flourish in Collaboration” Collaboration flourishes when skills vary. Someone shared this CNN article about Tamiah Brevard-Rodriguez defending her doctoral dissertation after delivering her son in her wife’s Maserati. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and here’s what I see in the picture below. 🔍I see the glamorization of Bl@ck women having to push past exhaustion and discomfort to get the things they want. I don’t have children, but I have 10 friends who are pregnant and who have given birth in the last two months, and they’ve all described how mentally and physically exhausting childbirth was. So I can only imagine what it is like to compartmentalize bringing a child into this world so that you could finally be done with your dissertation and then finally focus on your family and newborn. 🔍 I also see society reinforcing the trope that Bl@ck women are superheroes who don’t need rest, who don’t deserve accommodations, and who can bear it all. There’s so much more I can say from an intersectional lens as it relates to maternal mortality of Bl@ck women, and Tamiah is a Bl@ck woman with a wife. But my primary focus of this post is to center on how normal it is for people to praise Bl@ck women for pushing to the point of exhaustion. As someone who also pushed through very tumultuous times to complete my dissertation in 3 years, I know why she decided not to reschedule her defense. But that’s my point: our safety, comfort, and rest shouldn’t be a “reward” after completing all the major things on our to-do list. I did it before I started my sabbatical. I pushed to do so much because I thought once my sabbatical began, I could finally rest. If I’m being honest, I haven’t even been fully resting. Not because I don’t want to, but because 1) I have bills to pay and 2) there have been people constantly asking me to do things, people assuming that I am doing nothing and must be fully rested, so now I can do the things they think I should. I can’t tell you how often I’ve been asked, “Why are you so tired? I thought you were on sabbatical.” Or have I been told, “Oh wow, you’re on a sabbatical? Must be nice,” as if all of my responsibilities are put on hold, and I am rich, so I can lounge around all day and do nothing? Not to mention navigating neurodivergence. While I’m so happy Tamiah got her dissertation out the way and will be graduating and also that both she and her son are healthy, I encourage everyone else to reframe their thinking around Bl@ck women's need for rest. Exhaustion and “pushing through” have been normalized for all women, but when it comes to Bl@ck women, it’s also commodified and capitalized (all the major news outlets are getting views from this story). Bl@ck women deserve rest without guilt or explanation. We all do, especially now after back-to-back traumatic world events.

After years of building and leading teams, I've discovered a fundamental truth: The strongest teams don't rely on one dominant voice. 🌟 When I first became a director, I thought leadership meant: - Having all the answers - Making every decision - Being the center of attention - Controlling every outcome Reality quickly taught me otherwise. My breakthrough came when I stepped back during a critical project meeting and watched my team navigate a complex challenge without my input. In that moment, I realized my most significant achievement wasn't what I had done – but what I had enabled others to do. True leadership is about creating an environment where: ✅ Team members feel empowered to take initiative ✅ Different strengths are recognized and utilized ✅ Trust flows freely in all directions ✅ Shared purpose guides individual actions ✅ Growth happens organically through collaboration This approach transforms teams from being leader-dependent to self-sufficient. When everyone embodies leadership qualities, no single person needs to wear the title. How to build such a team: 1️⃣ Recruit for complementary strengths, not just technical skills 2️⃣ Create psychological safety where risk-taking is encouraged 3️⃣ Delegate authority, not just tasks 4️⃣ Celebrate collective wins above individual achievements 5️⃣ Invest in developing leadership capabilities across all levels The paradox is beautiful: the more you develop leadership in others, the less they need you as a traditional "leader." This doesn't diminish your role – it elevates it. When your team functions seamlessly without your constant direction, you've achieved something extraordinary. As Duarte grew, I��d hear feedback that decisions were made too slowly, which confused me. In reality, we didn’t have a system to recognize when the team was asking for a decision. We thought they were just informing us, so decisions would languish. We weren’t ignoring them, failing to act, or even making incorrect decisions... We just didn’t realize a decision needed to be made in the first place. It dawned on the exec team that the lack of clarity during the conversation is what slows teams down. Leaders and teams can share the same language for decision-making. Much of it is about shaping recommendations that actually lead to the right type of action and making the urgency clear. Here’s the shift that changed everything… We started mapping every decision against two factors: urgency and risk. Low risk, low urgency: Decide without me. Your team runs with it. Low risk, high urgency: Inform on progress. They update you, but keep driving. High risk, low urgency: Propose for approval. They bring a recommendation, and you decide together. High risk, high urgency: Escalate immediately. You're in it together, right now. Once my team understood which quadrant a decision lived in, they knew exactly how to approach me. And I knew exactly what my role was. The framework gave us a shared language. People can’t act on ideas if they don’t understand how decisions are made. Leaders should define how recommendations move from idea to approval to action. That transparency keeps progress from stalling. 🎣 “They didn’t even cc me.” This was how Yumi, a senior marketing director, found out her billion-dollar product had been repositioned, without her input. The project she had been leading for 18 months was suddenly reporting into someone else. She didn’t mess up. She wasn’t underperforming. She just wasn’t "there". Not at the executive offsite. Not at the Friday “golf and growth” circle. Not at the CEO’s birthday dinner her male peer casually got invited to. She was busy being excellent. They were busy being bonded. 🍷 When she asked her boss about the change, he was surprised: “You’re usually aligned with the bigger picture, so we assumed it’d be fine.” In Workplace politic-ish: Yumi was predictable. Available. Yet not powerful enough to be consulted. 🔍 What actually happened here? Women are told to build relationships. Men build alliances. Women maintain connections. Men maintain relevance in power circles. It’s not about how many people like you. It’s about how many people speak your name when you’re not in the room. And in most companies, the real decisions - about budget, headcount, succession, are made off-the-clock and off-the-record. 📌 So, how do you stop getting edited out of influence? Try these: 1. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗽. Not the org chart. The whisper network / shadow organistion. Who gets invited to early product reviews? Who influences without title? Start mapping that! 2. 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲-𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁. If your name hasn’t been mentioned by 3 different people in senior leadership this month, you are invisible to power, even if you’re a top performer. 3. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. Skip the webinars and female empowerment panels. Start showing up where strategy happens: QBRs, investor briefings, offsite planning, cross-functional war rooms. 4. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹. Schedule recurring 1:1s with lateral stakeholders, not to “catch up,” but to co-build. Influence travels faster across than up. 5. 𝗕𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘀. If you vanished for 2 weeks and no one noticed, you’re not central enough to promote. 🧨 If any of this feels raw, it’s because it is. Brilliant women are being rewritten out of their own stories, not for lack of performance, but for lack of positioning.
