A contract by Public Services and Procurement Canada | Services publics et Approvisionnement Canada on behalf of the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne (CSA) valued at $44.7 million to procure and deliver critical long lead parts in support of the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) replenishment satellite development has been awarded to MDA Space. The Government of Canada further announced its intention to contract MDA Space to build, test, and launch this additional satellite for the RCM. Strong partnerships are essential to turning research into real economic impact. It was a pleasure meeting with Alejandro Adem to discuss OCI’s long-standing collaboration with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) . For more than 15 years, OCI and NSERC have worked together to co-fund collaborative R&D between Ontario companies and the province’s colleges and universities. The goal is to strengthen industry-academic collaboration and help move promising research from the lab into the marketplace. Over the past five years, this partnership has supported 122 projects, representing $11.9M in co-funded investment, alongside contributions from industry partners. The outcomes from those projects include: • 345 jobs created or retained • $24.9M in new sales • $94.6M in follow-on investment Partnerships like this are an important part of building Ontario’s innovation economy. Reflecting on our most recent mission to India, one thing stood out clearly: the global competition to advance national interests through technology, talent and partnerships is intensifying.   Countries are moving quickly to strengthen their positions in areas like artificial intelligence, not just through private investment, but through long-term partnerships, public research infrastructure and talent development. Universities sit at the center of that work.   Canada’s leadership in AI was built over decades at university campuses, through research excellence, global collaboration and people trained to turn ideas into real-world solutions. That foundation is also what allows Canada to engage internationally — building partnerships that support economic growth, research capacity and shared standards for responsible AI.   As Canada shapes its next AI strategy, this context matters. Nearly 60% of Canadian jobs are significantly affected by AI-driven change yet public trust remains fragile. Dual-use technology changes the rules for IP. If your innovation can be used in both commercial and defence contexts, your IP strategy isn’t just about protection, it’s also about control. With Canada increasing defence investment, more SMEs are entering this space. But many are still applying conventional IP approaches to what is, in reality, a very different operating environment. IP decisions here don’t just protect ideas, they shape regulatory alignment, access to funding and procurement, investor confidence, and long-term value. The way your IP is structured can determine where you can operate, who you can work with, and how your technology evolves as you scale. Strong strategies tend to be layered and deliberate. They combine patents, trade secrets, and contractual controls to manage access, limit risk, and preserve flexibility, while accounting for regulatory considerations early, not retroactively. For founders, IP becomes less of a legal checkbox and more of a strategic lever. And in dual-use, how you manage that lever can define your trajectory.
