Al Rey reposted thisAl Rey reposted thisThe problem is not documentation, it’s the difference between knowledge and memory. Knowledge is raw content. The wiki page, meeting notes or gitlog, things captured after the fact. But, memory is different. Memory is the distillation of what is important to that knowledge. The layer that knows which parts of what happened actually matter, and to whom, and when. And, Intelligence is knowing what is important in the first place. Most organizations have knowledge. A tiny few have intelligence and even fewer have memory. This causes very much avoidable issues like that faced by a team I spoke with last month. They estimated that losing one senior engineer cost them $1.4M, not in salary or recruiting, but in 11 weeks of re-litigating decisions he had carried in his head. This distinction between memory and knowledge is at the core of what I have been working on for the last few years, understanding how one can actually create a persistent memory that reasons over time. The finding: you cannot solve memory through storage and retrieval alone. You need architecture. So we built one. Sentra is an organisational memory system. It captures the semantic context of every decision your organisation makes. The reasoning behind the call. What was rejected. The commitments that never made it into any document. It does not capture everything. It captures what is important to business decisions. Not personal dynamics. The context your team actually loses when someone leaves, when a new hire joins, when a decision needs to be revisited six months later. That changes what is possible. Onboarding that costs 90 days in context rebuild does not have to. The memory already exists. Decisions that require five calls to reconstruct the reasoning require one. The pricing exception nobody remembers approving stops happening. The vendor you already evaluated and rejected two years ago doesn’t make it back onto the shortlist. The post-mortem action item that quietly died in someone’s DMs gets surfaced before the next incident. Over the past week we started sharing the research we’ve been doing at Sentra and even the little bit we did talk about got such interesting responses, we dropped the Sentra launch video, and watched the conversation around long-term memory & agent architectures heat up exactly the way we hoped. None of it feels “viral”, a few 100k+ reads is momentum, not magic, but it’s meaningful momentum. It tells us the problem we’re solving (how organizations actually remember what they know) is something people genuinely care about. Feels like early signs of a wave that will peak in the next 6 months. Al Rey liked thisAl Rey liked thisWe force every new hire to build their own standing desk from scratch. It's a tradition we've had at our Toronto office since the day we started. Every person who joins gets the parts on their first day and assembles them before anything else. A lot of people think it's a waste of time, and some think it's beneath them. The criticism is reasonable on the surface - why would you make someone start their job by spending hours putting together furniture? But willingness to do the unglamorous work is one of the strongest signals we have for whether someone will work out here. Most days at a startup don't look like the version you see online. The launches and the fundraising announcements are the smallest part of it. Most days are chores - work nobody else volunteered for, work that feels small in the moment, work that just has to get done before anything else can move forward. Those are the days that actually decide everything. If someone can only show up for the exciting parts, the rest doesn't compound. The mundane days are when real progress gets made, and most people don't realize that until years in. The desk building is a just small early signal that someone already understands that. And so far, every new hire who's built their own desk has stayed with us since :)

Ensuring people benefit from AI requires making it broadly accessible and helping people develop the skills to use it in their daily lives. More than 3 million people have used OpenAI Academy resources to build knowledge and skills— including one million who have joined our online community and thousands who have also joined our online and in-person events across the country. Last week OpenAI President and Co-Founder Greg Brockman joined us for two OpenAI Academy sessions. In Oakland, we partnered with The Hidden Genius Project, Self-eSTEM, All Tied Up, Kingmakers of Oakland, Oakland Natives, and Black Girls Code to host a full-day OpenAI Academy session for high school students and Hidden Genius Project alumni from across the East Bay. He also met with participants at a hands-on AI skills session in San Francisco, co-hosted with AARP’s OATS program, where people explored how ChatGPT can help improve daily life. And today we’re hosting an Academy workshop, also in Oakland, for non-profits to showcase how they can use ChatGPT to help scale their impact and do more in their communities. Meanwhile, in Abilene, we hosted an OpenAI Academy with the Development Corporation of Abilene, TSTC, and Cisco College, bringing together more than 50 local educators and administrators, along with 60 small business participants. These events are not just opportunities to teach skills and empower participants — they’re also an important way for us to hear directly from people across a wide range of communities, gather feedback, and continue building tools that better serve and empower them.
